Record fish award winners to be honored at Northwest Sports ShowThree Minnesota anglers who caught state record fish in 2007 will be honored by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Saturday, April 5, at the 76th annual Northwest Sports Show at the Minneapolis Convention Center. DNR Commissioner Mark Holsten will present the awards during a 5 p.m. ceremony in Seminar Room 101H. The new state records are a 5-pound, 9-ounce shovelnose sturgeon, 0.39-pound warmouth and 3-pound, 15-ounce golden redhorse. Nelia Engen of Little Canada caught the shovelnose sturgeon May 31 in the Mississippi River near Red Wing. Lee Newman of Winona caught the warmouth Feb. 23 in Airport Lake near Winona. The warmouth is a new entry into Minnesota’s record fish listing. The fish, a member of the bass and panfish family, is similar to a bluegill and, because of its limited distribution in Minnesota, is rare. Andrew Geving of Blaine caught the golden redhorse April 29 in the Root River near Whalen. The National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wis., recognizes Geving’s fish as a world record.
