HUNTING AND FISHING HERITAGE EXPO CONTEST KICKS OFF FOR WYOMING STUDENTS CHEYENNE-- The Wyoming Hunting & Fishing Heritage Expo Poster, Poetry and Essay competition for Wyoming students is now underway.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Expo is a free educational event for all ages and skill levels featuring outdoor activities like shooting, fishing, canoeing and archery. The poster, poetry and essay competitions are one way students can get involved in the Expo and the bigger world of wildlife. This year’s Expo theme is "Our Wildlife, Our Kids, Our Future."
"This is a great way to get youth to start thinking about wildlife conservation," said Wendy Hayes, conservation education manager for the Game and Fish. "In this competition, students are asked to express what Wyoming's outdoor heritage means to them, and actively participating in this contest encourages students to consider their own involvement in the world around them and their own conservation efforts."
Any Wyoming student in grades 3-6 can take part by entering the poster competition, grades 7-9 can enter the poetry competition, and the essay portion of the competition is designed for grades 10-12. All entries must be received before 5 p.m. May 1, 2008.
All competition entries must integrate the theme into their product. The entries meeting the competition criteria will be displayed in Wyoming People, Places and Culture Gallery at the 2008 Expo, to be held Sept. 11-13, 2008 in Casper.
The first, second and third place winners in each category will receive a $200, $150 and $100 savings bond respectively. All winners will also receive an award ribbon, certificate, and complimentary one-year subscription to Wyoming Wildlife magazine. Winners will also be recognized at the Expo awards banquet.
The Expo offers more than 150 free activities, exhibits and demonstrations for all ages and skill levels, and is tied to the State Department of Education Content and Performance Standards in numerous academic disciplines. More than 40,000 Wyoming students and teachers have taken advantage of this unique educational opportunity in the past ten years.
