CAUTION URGED ON LATE SEASON ICE

CHEYENNE - Even though ice conditions are good on many waters throughout the state, unseasonal warm-ups can deteriorate ice rapidly and cause hazardous conditions for ice anglers.

Almost every year there are incidents of people falling through thin ice.  The recent tragic drowning when an ATV went through the ice at Glendo Reservoir underscores the importance of using utmost caution.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department advises that ice anglers should be aware that freezing and thawing, underice currents and other factors can contribute to unsafe ice conditions.  As a general rule, four inches of clear blue ice is safe for fishing, but even then, anglers should take precautions in the event of an accident.

Having a set of ice picks or big nails fastened with a line and draped around your neck will allow you to get a grip on the ice and pull youself to safety.  Even better is wearing a life jacket to keep you buoyant and make that task easier.  Practicing the buddy system while fishing is also a very good precaution.

Although 12-14 inches are reported to support a vehicle, the Game and Fish advises against driving on a frozen lake.  Unknown conditions along with Wyoming winds can affect thickness from one spot to the next.
