Freshwater Fishing Trends

Mountains Area
Lake Jocassee:

bulletLargemouth Bass: Fair, casting Carolina-rigged worms and jigging spoons. 
bulletTrout: Fair to Good, fishing early morning using minnows and herring 30 feet and up. Also trolling early morning and during the day with Sutton spoons in water 40 feet and up. Report of some night fishing activity producing catches on cut bait. 
bulletSmallmouth Bass: Fair, casting brown hair jigs or drifting live bait on rocky points and rocky banks. 
bulletCrappie: Slow. Try small minnows and jigs around brush piles. 
bulletCatfish: Fair, using nightcrawlers or cut bait on bottom, night is best. 
bulletBream: Slow, using popping bugs and dug worms around banks and brush.
bullet Jocassee Outdoor Center 2008 Annual Trout Fishing Tournaments - Feb. 9, March 8, April 12.

Lake Keowee:

bulletLargemouth Bass: Good, doodling plastic worms, jigging spoons and drop-shotting lures on the bottom. 
bulletCrappie: Fair, using small minnows under bridges day or night. 
bulletCatfish: Good, using nightcrawlers and cut bait on the bottom. 
bulletBream: Slow. Try red-worms around brush piles and around stumps.   

Lake Hartwell:

bulletLargemouth Bass: Fair, using buzzbaits and planer boards to get bait close to shore. Also try casting plastic purple worms.
bulletStriped and Hybrid Bass: Good, up the creeks with live herring and large minnows.
bulletCrappie: Fair, using small minnows. 
bulletCatfish: Fair, using cut herring on the bottom. 
bulletBream: Good, using red worms around brush piles.

Piedmont Area
Lake Russell:

bulletLargemouth Bass: Slow, try casting deepwater crank baits. 
bulletYellow Perch: Slow, try fishing minnows deep. 
bulletStriped and Hybrid Bass: Fair, using bucktails, cut bait and jigs especially when water is running below dam. 
bulletWhite Bass: Poor.  Try bucktails, spinners and live bait below dam. 
bulletCrappie: Good, using minnows and jigs around brush piles and bridges. 
bulletCatfish: Fair, using cut bait on the bottom. 
bulletBream: Good, using red wigglers and nightcrawlers.                 

Lake Thurmond:

bulletLargemouth Bass: Fair, casting plastic worms and Cleos. 
bulletStriped and Hybrid Bass: Good, using Cleos and KastMaster spoons. 
bulletCrappie: Fair, using medium minnows around rip-rap and brush tops. 
bulletCatfish: Fair, using cut bait, nightcrawlers and livers on the bottom. 
bulletBream: Fair, using crickets, worms and popping bugs.     

Lake Wylie:

bulletLargemouth Bass: Good, casting Carolina-rigged worms and plastic crawfish jigs. 
bulletStriped Bass: Good, below Wylie dam using bucktails, jigs and spoons when water is running. 
bulletWhite Bass: Fair, casting small spinners and jigs behind the dam. 
bulletCrappie: Good, using jigs and minnows around piers.
bulletCatfish: Good, using nightcrawlers on the bottom. 
bulletBream: Slow. Try redworms and nightcrawlers from the bank.           

Midlands Area
Lake Greenwood:

bulletLargemouth Bass: Good, casting crank baits and plastic worms on the bottom and jigging around structure. 
bulletStripers: Fair, using live bait, herring or shad 20 to 25 feet deep. Also casting spoons and bucktails to schools.
bulletFair catches of stripers being caught behind the dam. White Perch: Good, casting jigs and bucktails to schools. 
bulletCrappie: Fair, using minnows and mini jigs in black and chartreuse over brush in 10 to 20 feet of water. 
bulletCatfish: Fair, using cut bait and worms on the bottom. 
bulletBream: Slow. Try red worms along shore and docks. 

Lake Wateree:

bulletLargemouth Bass: Slow. Try fishing deep with Hopkins spoons or pig and jigs on structure such as humps and rises. 
bulletStriped bass: Good, fishing with down-rods 14 feet deep with small shiners in 23-37 feet of water. Try searching the river run with depth finder to locate stripers. 
bulletWhite Bass: Slow. Try trolling shad-like baits or same as striper fishing. 
bulletCrappie: Fair, trolling jigs, grubs and minnows 13-14 deep in creeks. 
bulletCatfish: Good, using live bait blues 13-24 feet in deep water. 
bulletBream: Slow. Try red worms along the bank.   

Lake Murray:

bulletLargemouth Bass: Fair, using crankbaits, number 5 or 7 Shad-raps or Carolina-rigged worms on the upper lake.
bulletStriped Bass: Fair, around Hollow Creek using bucktails with Iceflies and jigging with spoons 8 to 25 feet deep.  Watch for birds because baitfish and stripers are underneath. 
bulletCrappie: Good, using jigs and small tuffies around bridge pilings and brush piles. 
bulletWhite Perch: Good, jigging with small spoons, tuffy minnows and earthworms in 8 to 20 feet of water.
bulletCatfish: Fair, using cut herring and nightcrawlers on the bottom 5 to 15 feet deep.
bulletBream: Slow. Try red worms deep.       

Santee Cooper System            
Lake Marion:

bulletLargemouth Bass: Fair, using artificial worms, and bucktails fishing along the banks and points, reports of fish are also being caught in the ditch banks that are exposed due to the low water levels.
bulletStriped Bass: Good, using live shiners, herring or shad with down rods in 25 feet of water, reports of schooling near the dam.
bulletWhite Perch: Slow. Try jigging off the bottom with Hopkins spoons, or fishing the bottom with red worms.
bulletCrappie: Good. Try using small and medium minnows over deep brush piles, bridge pilings and piers, also try the ditch banks and gathering pools that are exposed due to the low water levels. Reports of 3 lb 8 oz crappie are being caught.
bulletCatfish: Excellent, using cut shad, mullet and bream off the bottom in deep water and on the ledges.
bulletBream and Shellcrackers: Slow. Try using redworms and crickets in 4 to 8 feet of water, also try ditch banks and gathering pools that are exposed due to the low water levels.

Lake Moultrie:

bulletLargemouth Bass: Poor. Try casting spinnerbaits, plastic worms and lizards along docks and structure.
bulletStriped Bass: Fair, trolling with Stretch-25s. No one live bait fishing. Some schooling noted.
bulletCrappie: Good, using small to medium minnows and Beetlespins around fish attraction areas and brush piles, also try in the water pooling areas, especially the ones with 6 to 8 foot of water.
bulletCatfish: Good, using cut herring or menhaden 25 to 50 feet deep near the bottom along dike edges.
bulletBream: Good, using crickets around fish attraction areas and crappie beds. Crickets can be kept alive in boat inside a thermos-type container.
bulletShellcrackers: Slow. Try redworms and green worms along the banks along river runs and points.
