This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Catches of the week

Sumner Lake: On January 12, Gabriel Rivera of Portales caught a 4.1-pound walleye and a 3.3 pound smallmouth bass. He was dragging slab spoons in 26 feet of water. On January 13, Bob Lechel of Los Alamos caught a 4.5-pound walleye. He was using a Walleye Flasher tipped with a 4-inch Gulp minnow and working it slow in 26 feet of water.

Roswell Kids Pond: On January 12, Victoria Rodriguez, age seven, caught three rainbow trout with the biggest checking in at 14 inches. She was using power bait.

NORTHEAST AREA

CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing pressure continued to be very light this past week and fishing was slow for all species.

EAGLE NEST LAKE: As of Monday the ice was about 15 inches thick. Fishing was rated as fair by anglers using roe sacs, ice jigs, salmon eggs and wax worms for a mixed bag of perch and rainbow trout.

LAKE MALOYA / LAKE ALICE: As of Monday there was about 12 inches of ice at Lake Maloya and 10 inches at Lake Alice . Trout fishing was rated as fair-to-good this past week. Anglers did well using salmon eggs, home made dough baits, ice jigs and power bait. Most of the fish caught were in the 8-to-11 inch range.

MONASTERY LAKE: We had no reports this week. Anglers are reminded that this lake is closed to ice fishing.

PECOS RIVER: Water flow near Anton Chico as of Monday morning was 9.5cfs. Trout fishing was slow.

RED RIVER: Water flow below the hatchery was 44cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

RIO GRANDE: The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 470cfs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using large bunny leeches and clausers for northern pike. We had no reports on other species.

STORRIE LAKE: As of this past Monday there were a few patches of ice on the lake but plenty of open water for bank fishing. Trout fishing was good for anglers using cheese.

UTE LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. We heard of only a few white bass and one or two walleye taken by anglers using slab spoons and fishing at depths of 40-to-45 feet. Fishing pressure was very light.

 
NORTHWEST ARE

ABIQUIU LAKE: Most of the coves were covered with a thin layer of ice but the boat ramp area was still open as of this past Monday. We had no reports from anglers.

ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS: Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using salmon eggs, wax worms, copper john barrs, egg patterns and parachute adams . Anglers having the best luck were drifting salmon eggs on light line.

BLUEWATER LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week. For updated ice conditions contact the state park office at 505-876-2391.

CHAMA RIVER: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 169cfs and 204cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair for anglers using small spoons, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

COCHITI LAKE: As of Monday there was some ice forming in the coves and a little near the boat ramp. We had no reports from anglers.

EL VADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

FENTON LAKE: As of Monday, the ice was about 11.5 inches thick. Trout fishing was fair using worms, salmon eggs and ice jigs.

HERON LAKE: Trout fishing this past week was fair for anglers fishing in the Ridge Rock area. They did best using roe sacs. There was some thin ice forming on about 60% of the lake on Monday.

JACKSON LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

JEMEZ WATERS: Fishing the lower waters on the Jemez was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, egg patterns and copper john barrs. We had no reports on other Jemez waters.

LAKE FARMINGTON: We had no reports from anglers this week.

NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was extremely light.

RAMAH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 709cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair for anglers using black midges, desert storms, bunny leeches and orange sparkle worms. The most successful anglers were fishing slow and deep. Water clarity was just over a foot. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using wooly buggers, garlic cheese, power bait and power eggs.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE: Anglers are reminded that the lake is closed to ice fishing.

TINGLEY BEACH: At the Youth Pond and the Central Pond, trout fishing was good using silver spoons, olive leeches and white, orange and yellow power bait. At the Catch and Release Pond best baits were white bunny leeches, scuds, emergers and pink egg patterns.

SOUTHWEST AREA

BEAR CANYON: We had no reports from anglers this week.

BILL EVANS LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, worms and power bait.

BURN LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good using salmon eggs, corn and power bait.

CABALLO LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing was slow-to-fair using slab spoons, live bait and jigs tipped with bait for white bass. Fishing for all other species was slow.

GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this week.

ESCONDIDA LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

GILA RIVER: Water flow near Gila on Monday was 182cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE ROBERTS: We had no reports from anglers this week.

PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow for all species.

QUEMADO LAKE: As of Monday, the lake was covered with a thin layer of ice. It was considered unsafe for ice fishing.

RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 18cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using worms and salmon eggs.

SOUTHEAST AREA

BATAAN LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, worms and spinners.

BOSQUE REDONDO: We had no reports from anglers this week.

BOTTOMLESS LAKES: Fishing was slow. Stocking has been suspended due to a golden algae bloom.

BRANTLEY LAKE: Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: The lake is being drained to accommodate maintenance work and will remain so at least through February.

GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait.

JAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE VAN: Trout fishing was fair-to-good this past week. Anglers did best using garlic cheese but a few fish were also taken on salmon eggs and power bait.

MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

OASIS PARK LAKE: The State Park has drained the lake for maintenance and renovation. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.

PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 19cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, spinners and garlic cheese. We had no reports on other species.

PERCH LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using power bait, cheese and salmon eggs.

RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was .82cfs. Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using salmon eggs.

SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

SUMNER LAKE: Walleye and smallmouth bass fishing was very good this past weekend. Anglers did well dragging slab spoons and slow trolling white grubs and walleye flashers tipped with Gulp minnows. Anglers also did very well casting and slow retrieving swim baits along break lines.
