This fishing report has been generated from the best information available
from officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is
compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter
fish and angler activities.
Catches of the week
Chama River: Dec. 31, Steven Miller of Santa Fe caught
a 21-inch and an 18-inch brown trout. He was fishing the river below El
Vado and using a rainbow colored Z Ray.
Ute Lake: Jan. 1, Donnie Bell of Fritch, Texas, caught a
6.56-pound smallmouth bass. He was using a jigging spoon in 30-to-40 feet
of water. On the same day, Jim O’Conner of Amarillo caught a 6.43-pound
walleye. He was using a jigging spoon in 35-to-45 feet of water.
Sumner Lake: Jan. 5, Dan Brophy of Espanola caught a
6.5-pound walleye. On the same day, Brian Stangel of Albuquerque caught a
6-pound walleye. Both were using Leprechaun slab spoons.
Eagle Nest Lake: Jan. 5, Ernie Sutliff of Eagle Nest
caught two 21-inch rainbow trout. He was fishing on the north side of the
lake and using roe sacs for bait.

NORTHEAST AREA
CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing pressure was extremely light. We
had no reports from anglers this week.
EAGLE NEST LAKE: As of Monday the ice was about 12 inches
thick. Fishing has been sporadic but several nice size trout and perch
have been taken by anglers using roe sacs, salmon eggs and ice jigs.
LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE: As of Monday there was about
7-to-9 inches of ice at both lakes. Trout fishing was fair for anglers
using home made dough baits. Fishing pressure was light. Contact the park
office at 505-445-5607 for updated ice conditions.
MONASTERY LAKE: We had no reports this week. Anglers are
reminded that this lake is closed to ice fishing.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow near Anton Chico as of Monday
morning was 34cfs. Trout fishing below the town of Pecos was slow-to-fair
for anglers using salmon eggs, copper john barrs and egg patterns.
RED RIVER: Water flow below the hatchery was 57cfs. We
had no reports from anglers this week.
RIO GRANDE: The water flow Monday morning at the Taos
Junction Bridge was 537cfs. Fishing was slow but there were a few trout
taken by anglers using wooly buggers, copper john barrs and worms. There
were also a few northern pike taken by anglers using large bunny leeches
and clausers.
STORRIE LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
UTE LAKE: Fishing was generally slow with very light
pressure but there were a few walleye and bass taken by anglers using slab
spoons and jigs at depths of 30-to-45 feet. We had no reports on other
species.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this
week.
ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS: Trout fishing was good this past
week for anglers using parachute adams, egg patterns, worms, salmon eggs,
copper john barrs and wax worms.
BLUEWATER LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

CHAMA RIVER: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and
Abiquiu were 176cfs and 144cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was
fair for anglers using Z Rays, worms, egg patterns and copper john barrs
for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.
COCHITI LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
EL VADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
FENTON LAKE: As of Monday, the ice was about 10 inches
thick. Fishing was fair for anglers using ice jigs, wax worms and power
eggs.
HERON LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
JACKSON LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
JEMEZ WATERS: Water flow on the Jemez River as of Monday
was 20cfs. Fishing the lower waters on the Jemez was fair for anglers
using salmon eggs and copper john barrs. We had no reports on other Jemez
waters.
LAKE FARMINGTON: We had no reports from anglers this
week.
NAVAJO LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers
fishing from the bank and using power bait. We had no reports on other
species.
RAMAH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday
morning was 716cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was
fair-to-good for anglers using small egg patterns, orange sparkle worms,
leeches, black beauties, red annelids and San Juan worms. Anglers with the
best success were fishing slow and deep. Fishing through the bait waters
was good using garlic cheese, power bait, copper john barrs and power
eggs.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE: As of Monday there was more ice on the
lake than the previous week. Anglers are reminded that the lake is closed
to ice fishing.
TINGLEY BEACH: At the Youth Pond and the Central Pond,
trout fishing was good using gold and silver Super Dupers, black and
silver spinners and olive Pistol Petes. At the Catch and Release Pond best
baits were bunny leeches, chamois leeches, scuds and black bead wooly
buggers.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BILL EVANS LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using
salmon eggs, worms and power bait.
BURN LAKE: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, corn
and power bait. A few trout were also taken by anglers using spinners.
CABALLO LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.
ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing was slow-to-fair using slab
spoons, and jigs for white bass. A few striped bass were taken by anglers
using live bait. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow.
We had no reports on other species.
GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this week.
ESCONDIDA LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
GILA RIVER: Water flow near Gila on Monday was 126cfs. We
had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE ROBERTS: We had no reports from anglers this week.
PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow for all species.
QUEMADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was
10cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using worms and salmon eggs.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using
small spoons and salmon eggs.
BOSQUE REDONDO: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for
anglers using spinners, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs and power bait.
BOTTOMLESS LAKES: Fishing was slow. Stocking has been
suspended due to a golden algae bloom.
BRANTLEY LAKE: Anglers are to practice catch and release
for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.
CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: The lake is being drained to
accommodate maintenance work and will remain so at least through February.
GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: Trout fishing was good for anglers
using salmon eggs and power bait. Most of the fish caught were in the
10-to-14 inch range.
JAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE VAN: Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs and
power bait. We had no reports on other species.
MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
OASIS PARK LAKE: The State Park has drained the lake for
maintenance and renovation. For more information contact the park office
at 505-356-5331.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was
17cfs. Fishing was fair for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs for
trout. We had no reports on other species.
PERCH LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using power bait,
power eggs and Pistol Petes under a bubble.
RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was
3.3cfs. Trout fishing was slow but a few fish were taken by anglers using
salmon eggs.
SANTA ROSA LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this
week.
SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was very good this past week for
anglers using jigs and slab spoons for walleye and a few white bass. We
received reports of several limits caught by anglers fishing this past
Friday and Saturday. Most of the fish were taken by anglers using hot
pink, white and chartreuse slab spoons and working them at depths of
35-to-38 feet. Water surface temps ranged from 36-to-39 degrees.
