CENTRAL ARKANSAS

Lake Conway: Bates Field and Stream (501-470-1846) said the water is muddy and high. Crappie fishing is fair on jigs. A few bass have been caught on crankbaits.

Little Red River:Lindsey's Resort (501-302-3139) said the water is clear and low with little generation every day. Trout fishing has been very good on waxworm/marshmallow combinations and Power Bait. When the water is high, spinnerbaits and jigs are working well.

Jed Hollan at the Little Red Fly Shop said the Greers Ferry powerhouse has been releasing water most days in an effort to lower the lake level. Scheduled maintenance at the dam temporarily stopped the water releases on January 7 with resumed releases planned after the Jan. 10. The water driving the turbines averaged 47 degrees with dissolved oxygen content of 7.2 mg/l. Now that winter has arrived, activity on the Little Red has slowed to a crawl. The brown trout spawn is over and there is not a lot of aquatic insect activity. (Brook trout, however, are in full spawn at JFK Park.) Sow bugs (sizes 14-16, UV tan, peacock or light gray) and zebra midges (sizes 16-22, red or black) will remain the bugs of choice.

Greers Ferry: As of Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 459.83 feet MSL.

Tommy Cauley of Fish Finder Guide Service said the water temperature is as high as 52 degrees in the main lake and as low as 35 degrees in the extreme ends of the rivers. Catfishing has come to a halt with the cold nights, but should pick back up to fair with a few warmer days. Walleye fishing is spotty, but a few can be caught as deep as 70 feet and some are halfway up the streams to spawning areas and can be caught on a jig-and-minnow combination. Crappie are biting well in pole timber on small minnows (size 4), but only two or three are being caught off each tree. No report on bream. Bass are biting well on Rat-L-Traps, small square-billed crankbaits and spinnerbaits fished shallow and football-head jigs and Carolina-rigged Rite Bite Cinkos fished on ledges. White bass and hybrids are biting well. Use your electronics or follow the gulls to find schools of shad and use jigging spoons, in-line spinners and crankbaits to fish below the shad schools for the best action.

Harris Brake Lake: Coffee Creek Landing (501-889-2745) said water conditions are normal. Crappie fishing is fair on minnows and jigs. Catfish are biting fairly well on worms and stinkbait in deeper water.

Lake Overcup: Overcup Landing (501-354-9007) said the water is clear and a little high. Bream fishing is fair on worms and crickets. Crappie are biting well on minnows around brush piles and other woody cover. Catfish are biting well on shad.

Arkansas River at Morrilton: Charley’s Hidden Harbor in Oppelo said few anglers are on the river. Catfishing is strong in deep holes, 20 feet and deeper below dams 9 and 10 on whole shad. Stripers are biting well on live shad floated 6 to 8 feet deep below dam 9. Sauger are biting well below dams 9 and 10 and at Copper’s Gap on a jig tipped with a minnow and floated under a bobber. Drum are biting very well on tubes and crayfish near jetties and wingdams.

NORTH ARKANSAS

White River: Mountain River Fly Shop said the Bull Shoals voice message said eight units were running on Wednesday morning then six on Saturday. The fishing continues to be very good. Both the standard red and black Zebra Midges have been doing exceptionally well. Some customers were reporting the midge fishing slowed during the afternoons from Cotter downstream, but that there had been some nice blue wing olive hatches. Woolly bugger anglers have been doing exceptionally well since Christmas, particularly our Red Head Olive. At Buffalo City our friends Chris and Elizabeth absolutely slayed them fishing the Red Heads on a tight line in at the tail end of the riffles. It barely seemed like they had any time between hookups.

Sportsman’s White River Resort said water conditions are pretty normal, with heavy generation lately. Trout fishing has been good on white jigs and Original Rapalas.

Angler’s White River Resort said the water conditions are normal. Trout fishing has been good on Power Bait and crankbaits.

Bull Shoals Lake: As of Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 650.61 feet MSL.

Bull Shoals Lake Boat Dock (870-445-4424) said some anglers are back on the water now that hunting has slowed. Bass are biting well on crankbaits in 5 to 15 feet of water on windy or cloudy days. Hula grubs and Carolina-rigged French fries are working well in 10 to 25 feet of water. Vertical jigging a spoon over old forests and standing timber is working well on Kentucky bass. Walleye are biting fairly well on spoons fished over large flats in 35 to 40 feet of water. Bottom bouncers baited with nightcrawlers are working well on walleye as well. Crappie are biting fairly well around the boat docks on minnows under a slip bobber in 18 to 25 feet of water.

Cranfield Junction Bait and Tackle (870-492-5141) said water conditions are normal. Crappie fishing is fair on minnows and jigs around brush piles. Bass fishing is good on spoons and jigs.

Norfork Tailwater: Mountain River Fly Shop said it seems like more and more people have been hitting Norfork the past week, and with good reason. It has been fishing nicely and though he water seems a little stained, the lake turnover is now done. Midges are the order of the day; Zebras Poison Tungs, WD40s and the like have all been performing well. We have also had good reports on Y2Ks and egg patterns plus the usual San Juan worms. But even more interestingly, for dry fly fiends, was the report today of some serious surface activity underway in the afternoons. Try Parachute Adams and standard Adams patterns in sizes 20 and 22. If the hatch isn’t on when you are there, make sure you have a healthy dose of Davy’s Sow bugs and a handful of McLellan’s Scuds.

Gene’s Trout Dock (870-499-5381) said water conditions are normal with little generation. Trout fishing is good on Power Bait and corn. Fly-fishing is going strong with black or green woolly buggers.

Jigging spoons are also working well when fished 15 to 20 feet deep along tree lines. Crappie are hit-and-miss from the rivers north to Prairie Creek. Fish channel ledges or bluffs along tree lines or brush piles. Crappie have been hitting Southern Pro 2-inch Hot Grubs in various shades of chartreuse, 10 to 25 feet deep. Stripers have been found from Point 12 upstream in either river arm. Channel bends near flats have worked well. The best bait has been brood minnows fished 10 to 15 feet deep. White bass have been hanging off main-lake points and can be caught on a ½-oz jigging spoon. Catfish have been along bluff lines and are hitting live brood minnows, liver and earthworms.

SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS

Millwood Lake : As of Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 256.40 feet MSL.

Millwood Lake Guide Service said main lake and Little River surface temperature is 44 to 47 degrees, depending on location and time of day. Main lake clarity and visibility is at 2-3 inches from high wind. Current is 3,002 cubic feet per second. Both ramps at Paraloma, both ramps at Cotton Shed, the Saratoga ramp closest to the dike, and both ramps at Beards Bluff are unusable because of the drawdown. Winter drawdown has revealed many submerged objects at or just within inches of pool surface in boat lanes and Little River.  Use extreme caution in navigation, many of the boat lanes during winter pool drawdown are now only 3-10 inches in overall depth in various places.

Largemouth bass are relating to deeper water in Little River. Bass are good to fair, along Little River with the best bites during the heat of the day.  Texas-rigged Hog Assassins, ¾-ounce Rat-L-Traps, various crankbaits and jigs are working well in the heavily stained water. Many fish are suspending during mornings and roaming some in afternoons. Pitching Texas-rigged creature baits in Green Pumpkin, Watermelon/Red, Camo, Ozark Smoke, and Blackberry to stumps close to deep water is drawing good strikes from large bass in Little River. Bomber Model A and Rebel Deep Wee R crankbaits in Black Pearl, Bayou Bengal and Secret Weapon colors are working well when deflected off stumps and fished slowly 8 to 12 feet deep. The Carolina rig bite tapered off over the past few days in Little River. Dead sticking Twitch Assassins in Crystal Shad, Salt n' Pepper Silver Phantom or Yamamoto 5-inch Senkos is also working well on a light wire hook for slow fall. The jig bite has improved, with Texas Craw color (chart/ pumpkin/black) or black/ blue/ purple working best. Finding long tapering points with stumps in Little River, between 10-15 feet deep seems to be the most consistent pattern for the jig-and-pig bite. No report on white bass. The crappie bite continues to improve along planted brush piles and 13-17 foot deep trees, mid-mornings, on live shiners or smoke grubs on light wire jigheads. Vertical jigging Blakemore Crappie Thunder Road Runners was taking some really nice slabs between 12-17 feet deep last week. The best color for the Crappie Thunder Road Runners was Silver Shad. Consistent and steady current in Little River during pool drawdown over the past couple weeks, has kept the channel cats turned on. Good channel cats have been caught using chicken livers, hot dogs, cut bait or Catfish Charlie on trotlines and yo-yo's along the river and in oxbows hung from cypress trees in 10-15 feet of water.

Lake Columbia : Steve's Marine (870-234-2222) said water conditions are normal. Crappie fishing is good on shiners, jigs and minnows

Lake Erling : Steve's Marine (870-234-2222) said water conditions are normal. Bream fishing is fair on worms. Crappie fishing is good on jigs and shiners.

Lake Greeson : As of Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 541.50 feet MSL.

Darryl Morris of Family Fishing Trips Guide Service said the water has warmed up to 50 degrees. Most days have seen heavy overcast skies with strong winds, but the fishing has been great with a little effort. We've caught crappie on jigs and minnows from 15 to 26 feet deep in 20-32 feet of water on bamboo and hardwood brush piles. Stripers and white bass are starting to run up the river and can be caught on spoons in the shallow water flats while chasing huge schools of shad. Watch for the birds hitting the water. For a daily report with pictures of fish caught, visit http://www.familyfishingtrips.com/PhotosCurrent.htm

Little Missouri River: Jeff Guerin of Little Missouri Fly Fishing said fishing has been slow and the weather has made for some uncomfortable fishing, especially without neoprene waders.

DeGray Lake: As of Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 399.77 feet MSL.

DeGray One Stop (501-865-3511) said few anglers are on the water. No report.

Larry Hurley from Poorman’s Guide Service said fishing has been excellent the last few days with many bass coming from 8 feet deep and shallower. Rat-L-Traps and red crankbaits are working well in the shallower water. Spinnerbaits and Rat-L-Traps fished over the grass in 8-10 feet of water are also catching some good fish. Jigs fished in the shallow water and on the deep end of the grass in 18 feet of water are catching some nice bass as well. Stripers are fair to poor. Some crappie are being caught on grassy points in 10 to 18 feet of water.

Lake Catherine: Shane Goodner, owner of Catch’em All Guide Service, reports that the water temperature below the dam remains in the mid 40s, which is normal for this time of year. Rainbow trout fishing is good and will improve to excellent in the upcoming weeks as stockings continue. Fly-fishermen are having success casting streamers, olive woolly buggers, and micro jigs in current. The best fishing is during periods of generation as the trout actively feed on threadfin shad and small crayfish. Spin fishermen are still hooking trout in the 15-inch class on white Rooster Tails and Lil' Cleos around rock piles and sand bars. Bank fishermen are recording limits using nightcrawlers and redworms floated under a bobber. Corn and waxworms also are a good choice. Boaters trolling the channels are doing well using small crankbaits against the current. Trout in the 3-pound range have been taken with larger fish hooked and lost. Striper activity is on the rise with most of the fishing taking place below the bridge in the main channel. Large brood shad fished under a balloon rig have produced the largest fish, but most of the fish caught are between 10 and 12 pounds. Fish over 20 pounds have been hooked, but lost in the heavy current. White bass and hybrids are in and out of the tailrace, most under 2 pounds.

Lake Hamilton: Larry Hurley from Poorman’s Guide Service said fishing is excellent on crayfish-colored crankbaits and shad-colored jerkbaits fished from the bank to 10 feet of water around stump fields. Jigs fished in brush piles from 18 to 22 feet deep are also producing some nice-sized bass. Walleye are being caught on crayfish-colored crankbaits in 2 to 4 feet of water.

Lake Hinkle: Bill's Bait Shop (479-637-4719) said water conditions are normal. Crappie fishing is good on minnows. Bass fishing is fair on top-water plugs. A few catfish have been caught on minnows.
