Public Input Sought in Management Plans for Negwegon State Park, the Rockport Property, and Thompson's Harbor State Park

Contact:  Paul Curtis 517-335-4832
Agency: Natural Resources

The Department of Natural Resources will hold two public workshops on Tuesday, Dec. 11, in Alpena to seek input on the proposed management plans for Negwegon State Park in Alcona County, the Rockport property in Alpena County and Thompson's Harbor State Park in Presque Isle County.

The workshops will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary located at 500 W. Fletcher St. in Alpena.

The three parks combined provide over 13,100 acres of public property with over 22 miles of shoreline on Lake Huron. They hold some of the state's most unique and protected natural and cultural resources and provide varied recreational and educational opportunities, DNR officials said.

After a review of the planning process and the special qualities of these public lands, attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comment about these parks, the resources that exist there and the planning efforts currently underway.

The planning process is being facilitated by Birchler Arroyo Associates, who will participate with state officials in conducting this workshop. Information about these parks, the planning process, and the recommendations developed to date can be found on their web site at www.birchlerarroyo.com/Clients/MDNR-NRTH.htm. A management plan survey is available on this site and will also be available at the workshop. Interested parties are encouraged to visit this website to complete the survey and review the latest information about the plans and the parks.

Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for the meeting should contact Paul Curtis at 517-335-4832 a minimum of five working days before the workshop. Requests made less than five days before this meeting may not be accommodated.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
