This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Catches of the week

Ute Lake : Oct. 9, Glenna Anderson of Eunice caught a 4.53-pound walleye. She was using live bait.

Cochiti Lake : Oct. 9, Kenneth Early of Albuquerque caught a 6.25-pound largemouth bass. He was using a spinnerbait and fishing east-side points.

Abiquiu Lake : Oct. 12, Stan Kosiewicz caught a 31-inch walleye. The fish had a 17-inch girth and weighed 11 pounds. He was using a crank bait.

Santa Rosa Lake : Oct. 14, Tom McWhorter of Bosque Farms caught a 3.78-pound smallmouth bass. He was flipping a tube.

Sumner Lake : Oct. 14, Gary Smith of Fort Sumner caught a 4.5-pound smallmouth bass. He was using a 4-inch tube.

NORTHEAST AREA

CANJILON LAKES : We had no reports from anglers this week.

CHARETTE LAKES : Trout fishing was very good this past week for anglers using christmas tree/spinner and christmas tree/worm combinations, marshmallows and power bait. Fishing was fair-to-good using worms for perch. Charette Lakes close for the season on October 31.

CIMARRON RIVER : Water flow Monday morning below Eagle Nest was 11cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using copper john barrs, pheasant tail nymphs, worms and salmon eggs.

CLAYTON LAKE : Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using power bait and home made dough baits. A few small catfish were taken by anglers using dough baits and worms. We had no reports on other species.

CONCHAS LAKE : Fishing for walleye was fair for anglers using jig and minnow combinations and crank baits worked deep. Most of the walleye were taken at depths of 25-to-40 feet. Fishing was fair using top water lures, tubes, crank baits and spinner baits for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using liver and minnows for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

COYOTE CREEK: Fishing was slow.

EAGLE NEST LAKE : Fishing was fair-to-good using power bait and worms from the bank for a mix of perch, rainbow trout and kokanee. Fishing from boats was fair trolling Panther Martins, Pistol Petes and Platte River specials for kokanee and rainbow trout. Kokanee snagging was slow.

HOPEWELL LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE : Trout fishing was very good this past week at Lake Maloya . Anglers did well using marshmallows and rainbow colored power bait for limits of stocked trout. Anglers did well near the boat ramp and at the north end of the lake. Trout fishing at Lake Alice was fair for anglers using assorted colors of power bait.

LOS PINOS: Trout fishing was good again this past week for anglers using salmon eggs, worms and copper john barrs.

MAXWELL LAKES : We had no reports from anglers this week. Maxwell Lakes close for the season on October 31.

MCALLISTER LAKE : There has been a fish kill on the lake and there are no plans to restock the lake with trout at this time. The lake closes for the season on October 31.

MONASTERY LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using corn, salmon eggs and power bait.

MORPHY LAKE : Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, spinners and Pistol Petes. Morphy Lake closes for the season on October 31.

PECOS RIVER : Water flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 34cfs. Fishing was very good for anglers using small red and black copper john barrs and small pheasant tail nymphs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. The best reports came from anglers fishing below Cowles.

RED RIVER : Water flow below the hatchery was 66cfs. Trout fishing was fair using night crawlers and copper john barrs.

RIO GRANDE : The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 488cfs. Our best trout fishing reports again this week came from anglers fishing above the confluence with the Red River . They did well using wooly buggers, copper john barrs, micro mays and bead head pheasant tail nymphs. We had no reports on other species.

RIO PUEBLO : We had no reports from anglers this week.

SPRINGER LAKE : We had no reports from anglers. The lake closes for the season October 31.

STORRIE LAKE : Trout fishing picked up with the cooler weather and was reported as very good by anglers using power bait and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

UTE LAKE : Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was good for anglers using top water lures and drop shot rigs. A few bass were also taken by anglers using spinner baits. Good catches were reported by anglers fishing the Ute Creek arm and the Canadian arm of the lake. Fishing was good using jig and minnow rigs in 40-to-50 feet of water for walleye. Fishing was good using liver, dough bait and worms for catfish. A few crappie were taken by anglers using minnows and fishing at night.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

ABIQUIU LAKE : Fishing was fair trolling crank baits and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs at 20-to-35 feet for walleye. Fishing was fair using worms for perch. Fishing for smallmouth bass was slow-to-fair for anglers using tubes, Gulp minnows, leeches and crank baits in 5-to-20 feet of water. The best bass reports came from anglers fishing in the Canones Creek area. We had no reports on other species.

BLUEWATER LAKE : Fishing was fair for anglers using swim baits, crank baits and jerk baits for tiger musky. A few catfish were taken by anglers using night crawlers and liver. Fishing for all other species was slow.

CHAMA RIVER : Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 91cfs and 94cfs respectively. Fishing in both locations was fair-to-good using night crawlers and wooly buggers for brown trout. Several rainbows were taken by anglers using power bait and salmon eggs.

COCHITI LAKE : Fishing was fair-to-good using spinner baits and crank baits for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Anglers did best working points on the Tetilla Peak side of the lake. We had no reports on other species.

EL VADO LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

FENTON LAKE : Trout fishing was very good this past week for anglers using salmon eggs, worms and power bait. Our best reports came from anglers fishing in the morning hours.

HERON LAKE : Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers trolling Panther Martins, Mepps, Daredevles and Super Dupers. Anglers are reminded that kokanee snagging does not open here, on Willow Creek or on the Pine River until November 10 and any kokanee caught while fishing for trout must be immediately released.

JEMEZ WATERS: Water flow on the Jemez River on Monday morning was 20cfs. Fishing here and on the Rio Guadalupe was fair this past week for anglers using copper john barrs, small spinners, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Cebolla below Fenton Lake was slow.

NAVAJO LAKE : Salmon snagging was good this past week with our best reports coming from anglers working near the south corner of the dam. Trout fishing was fair in the salmon snagging area with anglers doing best at night and using roe sacs, salmon eggs and power bait. Fishing for catfish was fair for anglers fishing at night north of the Pine arm marina and using worm, cut bait and liver. Fishing for smallmouth bass was slow-to-fair for angler using tubes, drop shot rigs, crank baits and spinner baits. The best reports came from anglers fishing up the San Juan arm of the lake. Anglers fishing for bass also reported catching a few northern pike.

RAMAH LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN GREGORIO LAKE: Fishing was slow.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE : Trout fishing was good for anglers using spinners, night crawlers, power bait and salmon eggs.

SAN JUAN : Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 474cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair for anglers using RS2s, Griffith 's gnats, dead chickens, pheasant tail nymphs, San Juan worms and streamers. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using jerk baits, wooly worms, night crawlers, salmon eggs and spinners.

TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing for bass at the Central Pond was fair-to-good this past week for anglers using senkos, worms and spinners. Fishing for catfish was fair-to-good using chicken liver, worms and stink bait. Fishing for trout was slow.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

BEAR CANYON : We had no reports from anglers this week.

BILL EVANS LAKE : Fishing was slow-to-fair using small swim baits and tubes for largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

BURN LAKE : Fishing was slow for all species.

CABALLO LAKE : Fishing was fair using jigs, crank baits, spinners and grubs for white bass. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE : Fishing was fair-to-good using crank baits, spinners, slab spoons, live bait and jigs for white bass. Fishing was fair using drop shot rigs, top water lures, crank baits, senkos and tubes for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using liver, shrimp and cut bait for catfish. A few striped bass were taken by anglers using live bait, crank baits, jigs and umbrella rigs.

GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this week.

ESCONDIDA LAKE : Fishing was slow for all species.

GILA RIVER : Water flow near Gila on Monday was 101cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE ROBERTS : Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, wooly buggers and worms.

PERCHA DAM: We had no reports from anglers this week.

QUEMADO LAKE : Fishing was slow for all species.

RIO GRANDE : Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 976cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SNOW LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

BATAAN LAKE : Fishing was slow for all species.

BONITO LAKE : Trout fishing was good for anglers using worms, power bait, spinners, flies under a bubble and salmon eggs.

BOSQUE REDONDO: Fishing was slow for all species.

BRANTLEY LAKE : Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: We had no reports from anglers this week. Rainbow trout stocking has been temporarily suspended while the Village of Ruidoso treats the lake to control algae blooms.

JAL LAKE : Fishing was slow for all species.

LAKE VAN : We had no reports from anglers this week.

OASIS PARK LAKE : The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.

PECOS RIVER : Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 88cfs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using minnows, shrimp and worms for channel catfish.

RUIDOSO RIVER : Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 1.7cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA ROSA LAKE : Fishing was fair-to-good using tubes, spinner baits and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Anglers fishing for bass also caught a few walleye but the better walleye bite was in the evening hours for anglers using grubs and sassy shad on the flats.

SUMNER LAKE : Fishing was good using jig and white grub combinations for walleye at the north end of the lake. Fishing was fair using tubes and crank baits for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.
