WATERFOWL HUNTERS URGED TO TAKE CARE AROUND BOATS AND COLD WATER

COLUMBUS, OH – In preparation for the opening of waterfowl hunting on October 20, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) offers some basic safety tips to ensure hunters have an enjoyable and safe season on and around the state’s waterways.

“The proper use of approved life jackets, vests and flotation coats will help ensure that waterfowl hunters enjoy a safe hunting experience while on our state waterways,” said Pamela S. Dillon, chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft.

Waterfowl hunting generally involves heavy, bulky gear loaded into small boats. As a result, it can present a safety concern that is further increased by cold water and less-than-ideal boating conditions. ODNR offers these tips to help ensure waterfowl hunting activities remain safe and enjoyable this season:

bulletWear an approved life jacket, vest or flotation coat while in a boat or while moving to and from the hunting blind.
bulletDo not improperly overload a boat with gear and dogs beyond its weight capacity.
bulletLearn how to float in waders and hip boots or do not wear them in a boat.
bulletFile a float plan by informing a responsible person of the time of your departure and return and hunting location.
bulletCarry a fully charged cell phone that is stored in a waterproof plastic bag and kept readily accessible.
bulletStay near the shoreline and avoid crossing large expanses of open water in a boat when windy conditions or bad weather may occur.
