The
Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center at the
Waterloo Recreation Area near Chelsea has announced its slate of
fall nature programs. The programs are geared to children of all ages.
Children attending the programs must be accompanied by an adult.
The fall schedule is as follows:
 | Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16: Geology Arts Fair. This
program will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15 and
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16. Activities include rocks
and minerals, jewelry, Petoskey stone polishing, geology walks,
refreshments and children's activities throughout both days. |
 | Saturday, Sept. 22: Planet Earth and the Solar System. At 2
p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, children can participate in activities that
investigate the relationships among the earth, sun, moon and stars in
the Milky Way. |
 | Saturday, Sept. 29: What's That Skull? At 2 p.m. on
Saturday, Sept. 29, children can learn how to identify an animal skull
using a key. They will also learn how to examine a skull for clues
about what the animal ate and how it lived. |
 | Saturday, Oct. 6: Michigan Mammals. At 11 a.m. Saturday,
Oct. 6, children can attend a program about Michigan mammals and learn
ways to preserve wildlife habitat. |
 | Saturday, Oct. 13: Ice Age-The Meltdown. At 2 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 13, children can learn about the Ice Age and what
Michigan was like 10,000 years ago. |
 | Saturday, Oct. 20: The Cranes of Waterloo Festival. From 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, families can take a tour of
sandhill crane viewing areas at Waterloo State Recreation Area. There
also will be live animal presentations, activities for children, a
Rock Walkway discovery program and refreshments. |
 | Saturday, Oct. 27: Leaf Prints. At 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct.
27, join the Department of Natural Resources staff master gardener for
this program that will include gathering leaf samples on the grounds
of Waterloo State Recreation Area and using them to make leaf prints
to take home. Children can bring an article or clothing or other item
to put leaf prints on. |
 | Saturday, Nov. 10: Getting Their ZZZs. This program at 2
p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, will teach children about animals that
hibernate, and animals that stay active in winter and how they cope
with winter. |
Programs sponsored by the DNR are free of charge, but any vehicle
entering the recreation area needs a 2007 State Park Motor Vehicle
Permit. Permits are $6 for a daily for Michigan residents, and $24 for
an annual. For nonresidents, it is $8 for a daily and $29 for an annual.

Discovery Center is located at Waterloo State Recreation Area, on Bush
Road between Pierce and McClure Roads, just west of Chelsea.
