Public lakes in northeastern Indiana to be assessed for possible reopening Thursday

The public lakes in northeastern Indiana that were closed to boating by order of an emergency rule by DNR Director Robert Carter because of high water Aug. 24, will be assessed for possible Labor Day weekend reopening  by District 2 conservation officers Thursday.

"The question right now is will all the lakes be ready or will we have to reopen part of them Thursday and part of them later," said Lieutenant Dean Jenkins, District Two Commander of Indiana Conservation Officers. "We will just have to wait to see the condition on Thursday."

The public lakes that were closed to boating – and will remain closed—until Carter rescinds the emergency order follow:

Noble County:  Waldron, Steinbarger, Tamarack, Jones, Skinner and Sylvan.

Lagrange County:  Dallas, Witmer, Westler, Hackenberg, Messick, Big Turkey, Adams, Oliver, Olin and Martin.

Steuben County:  Big Turkey, Crooked, James, Snow, Jimmerson, Little Otter, Big Otter and George.

The emergency rule applies only to the lakes listed. Those seeking further updates may call the District 2 DNR Law Enforcement office, (260) 244-3720.
