Rick Potts Appointed NPS Chief of Conservation and Outdoor Recreation

(Washington, D.C.) – Rick Potts became the new National Park Service (NPS) Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Chief on August 5, 2007. Potts has more than 30 years of experience working with wilderness stewardship and resource management issues.

Potts will be responsible for establishing and maintaining agreements with other agencies, state and local governments, and numerous partners in the fields of recreation, trail development, conservation, and land protection.

Potts will assist NPS Associate Director of Partnerships and Visitor Experience Chris Jarvi with the national program management of the Challenge Cost Share Program, the Hydropower Relicensing Program, the Long Distance Trails Program, the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program, and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Program.

“Rick’s experience, vision, passion, and ability to unite stakeholders are just some of the reasons that I know he will excel in his new position,” said Jarvi.

Potts served as the Chief of the NPS Wilderness Stewardship and Recreation Management Division before assuming his new post. Prior to that, he was the NPS National Wilderness Training Program Manager. He has also worked in Resource Management at NPS sites in Hawaii, Alaska, and Virginia.
