DNR hosts family outdoor weekend
Parents still seeking a summer adventure with their children are invited
to the Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) Becoming an Outdoors Family
Weekend, Aug. 18-19, at Deep Portage Environmental Learning Center near
Hackensack.
The event is designed to give adults and kids the opportunity to learn
outdoors skills in a friendly, non-intimidating, up-north setting.
"Though summer is slipping away, there's still time to register for an
affordable and fun family weekend," said Linda Bylander, DNR Becoming An
Outdoors Woman coordinator. "Everyone will get a chance to learn fishing,
canoeing, archery, air- and laser-gun shooting, orienteering and rock wall
climbing."
Bylander said this is a great opportunity for families to connect or
reconnect with nature, plus each other. "Many Minnesota families' favorite
memories are drawn from the out-of-doors," she said. "This skill-building
weekend is one way to start new traditions that are both healthy and
personally rewarding."
The event, which includes lodging, food, equipment and instruction, costs
$60 per person or $200 per family of four. Family scholarships are available
due to the generosity of The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
For more information or to register, call the Deep Portage Environmental
Learning Center at 1-888-280-9908. The center is located about 40 miles
north of Brainerd.
