Fishing Fridays At Lake Bemidji State Park Offers Guided
Fishing Trips For Kids
Experts
say that the best time to instill an appreciation for the outdoors and
nature is early on when childhood curiosity makes all learning fun.
At Lake Bemidji State Park, "Fishing Fridays" from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., Aug.
3 and 17 and 31, will give kids 6 to 15 years old a chance to have a
boatload of fun while learning about fishing techniques, different kinds of
fish and their habitat.
"During our Fishing Fridays, we offer an opportunity for kids to take a
two-hour guided fishing trip on the park's pontoon boat," said John Fylpaa,
park naturalist and one of two guides aboard. "During the trip we work with
the kids to develop fishing skills as we explore our lake environment. When
we return to shore, the kids participate in cleaning and then lunching on
the catch of the day.
"The
park provides the fishing gear, bait and lifejackets," Fylpaa said. "All the
kids need to bring is their enthusiasm and some sunscreen."
Fylpaa noted that this is the second year the program has been offered.
"Because of busy family schedules, kids sometimes don't have an opportunity
to go fishing or develop this outdoor skill," said Fylpaa. "We began
offering this program to the kids of families who were camping in our park
but have extended the opportunity to kids in the community as well who would
like this experience."
For safety reasons, the program is limited to nine young anglers. Interested
participants must sign up in advance by calling the park office at (218)
755-3843. An adult must accompany children under 8 years old.
