This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

REMINDER TO ALL ANGLERS: The new license year began April 1. You may obtain a license at one of the many license vendors around the state, at Department of Game and Fish offices in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Raton or Roswel. You also can buy a license online by clicking here.

 

Catches of the week

Abiquiu Lake : May 27, Theodore Springer, 11, of Santa Fe caught a 24-inch, 4.1-pound walleye. He was using a Reef Runner rip shad at the time.

Navajo Lake : May 27, Rebecca Montoya of Portales caught her first fish. It was a 17.5-inch smallmouth bass. She caught it on a 7-inch power worm.

Sumner Lake : May 27, Dave Thompson of Tijeras caught a 28.5-inch, 7-pound walleye. He was using a leech.

San Juan River: May 27, Chris Griego of Albuquerque caught a 20-inch brown trout. He was using a brook trout colored Panther Martin.

Cimarron River : June 2, Adam Cline caught a 21.5-inch rainbow trout. He was using a black and gold Panther Martin.

Bluewater Lake : June 2, Shea Nolan of Rio Rancho caught a 14-pound channel catfish. He was using cut bait and also landed two 5-pound catfish.

Ute Lake : June 3, Chad Cox of Amarillo caught a 5.15-pound smallmouth bass. He was using a pop-R. From the same boat on the same day, Marty Schultz of Amarillo caught a 4.44-pound smallmouth bass while using a senko.

NORTHEAST AREA

CANJILON LAKES : We had no reports from anglers this week.

CHARETTE LAKES : Trout fishing was good for anglers using grasshoppers in the deeper holes. A few trout were also taken by anglers using power bait. Fishing was very good using worms for perch.

CIMARRON RIVER : Water flow below Eagle Nest this past Monday was 4.9cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using copper john barrs and bead head San Juan worms.

CLAYTON LAKE : Fishing slowed a bit this past week and was rated as fair-to-good by most anglers fishing for trout and walleye. Best baits for trout were salmon eggs, worms, power bait and home made dough baits. Walleye anglers did best trolling spinner/night crawler combinations. A few were also taken by anglers fishing from the bank with night crawlers. We had no reports on other species.

COCHITI LAKE : Crappie and bluegill fishing was very good this past week for anglers using minnows and worms. Most of the action was on the Tetilla Peak side of the lake. Fishing for northern pike was good for anglers using minnows and spinner baits. Fishing was fair using crank baits, minnows and tubes for smallmouth bass and walleye. We had no reports on other species.

CONCHAS LAKE : Fishing for bluegill was very good for anglers using worms, minnows, chamois leeches and small caddis. Fishing for walleye was very good for anglers using chartreuse and white jigs tipped with minnows or worms and worked in 5-to-20 feet of water. A few walleye were also taken on deep diving crank baits and bottom bouncer/minnow rigs. Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was good using senkos, tubes, brush hogs, crank baits and top water lures. Most of the black bass were in less than 10 feet of water. Fishing for white bass was good for anglers using jigs tipped with cut bait, crank baits and spinners.

COYOTE CREEK: Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using salmon eggs, corn, worms and power bait. A few trout were also taken on bead head nymphs.

EAGLE NEST LAKE : Trout fishing from boats and from the bank was good this past week for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners. Anglers trolling with spinners also picked up a few kokanee. Fishing was good using worms for perch.

HOPEWELL LAKE : Trout fishing was fair for anglers using olive and black wooly buggers, spinners and power bait.

LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE : Trout fishing was very good at Lake Maloya . Anglers did well using black Pistol Petes from boats and power bait from the bank. At Lake Alice fishing was good using power bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes. For information on the ongoing fishing derby call the state park office at 505-445-5607.

MAXWELL LAKES : Fishing for rainbow trout was good for anglers using power bait.

MCALLISTER LAKE : Trout fishing was good for anglers using spinners, power bait, Pistol Petes and corn/salmon egg combinations for fish up to 12 inches.

MONASTERY LAKE : Trout fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs, corn and power bait.

MORPHY LAKE : Trout fishing was good for anglers using power bait, prop flies and spinners.

PECOS RIVER : As of Monday, water flow near Pecos was 332cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using copper john barrs, wooly buggers, spinners and worms.

RED RIVER : Water flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 198cfs and the water was murky. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, spinners, San Juan worms and night crawlers.

RIO GRANDE : The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 801cfs. Fishing the upper river was fair for anglers using large red and white flies for northern pike. Fishing in the Pilar area was slow but there were a few trout taken by anglers using copper john barrs and night crawlers.

SPRINGER LAKE : Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using cut bait, crank baits and spinner baits for 18-to-26 inch northern pike. We had no reports on other species.

STORRIE LAKE : Fishing was very good using cheese and salmon eggs for 16-to-20 inch trout. Fishing was good using worms and chicken liver in the evenings for catfish.

STUBBLEFIELD: Fishing was fair-to-good using spinner/night crawler combinations, grubs and crank baits for walleye. We had no reports on other species.

UTE LAKE : Walleye fishing continued to be very good this past week. Anglers did well using bottom bouncer/night crawler and bottom bouncer/minnow rigs, and crank baits for walleye suspended over brush in 15-to-20 feet of water. Fishing was good trolling crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair-to-good using jigs and minnows for crappie. Fishing was good using top water lures, tubes, senkos and jigs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using cut bait, liver and night crawlers for catfish.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

ABIQUIU LAKE : Fishing for smallmouth bass was good for anglers using jointed shad raps, senkos and tubes in the backs of coves. Fishing for walleye was good trolling rip shad and shad raps in 10-to-20 feet of water. Anglers fishing for walleye also picked up a few trout and catfish.

ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS: Fishing on the Belen Drain was good using wooly buggers for white bass and crawdad imitations and baby brush hogs for largemouth bass. Fishing on the Corrales Drain was good using small flies and worms for bluegill. Fishing on the Bernalillo Drain was fair using liver and worms for catfish.

BLUEWATER LAKE : Fishing was fair using cut bait and liver for catfish. A few tiger musky were caught and released by anglers using large spinners and jerk baits. Fishing for trout was slow.

CHAMA RIVER : Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 504cfs and 851cfs below Abiquiu. Trout fishing below El Vado was good for anglers using salmon eggs Panther Martins and night crawlers.

EL VADO LAKE : Trout fishing was very good for anglers trolling black Panther Martins at the north end of the lake. Most of the rainbows were taken 5-to-7 feet below the surface and averaged 18 inches in length. Fishing from the bank was fair-to-good for anglers using night crawlers and power bait for a mix of rainbow and brown trout.

FENTON LAKE : Trout fishing slowed a bit during the past week but picked up again on the weekend. Anglers did well using salmon eggs, worms, Pistol Petes and Z-Rays.

HERON LAKE : Kokanee action picked up this past week as several anglers did well trolling Panther Martins and Double Whammies. The fish ranged in size from 13-to-17 inches with the larger fish being taken at 20 feet. A few rainbows were taken by anglers trolling for kokanee and from the bank with power bait.

JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 54cfs. Fishing on the Jemez was fair for anglers using salmon eggs and copper john barrs. Fishing was very good on the upper East Fork for anglers using small prince nymphs and small light colored caddis. Fishing on the Cebolla was good for anglers using salmon eggs, worms and small spinners.

MANZANO LAKE : Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait, spinners and salmon eggs.

NAVAJO LAKE : Fishing was fair-to-good trolling Arnies and wedding rings in 25-to-40 feet of water for kokanee. Crappie fishing was good for anglers using minnows, small jigs and worms. Fishing for bluegill was good using worms and small jigs. Fishing for smallmouth bass was good for anglers using senkos, spinner baits, tubes and baby brush hogs. Fishing was fair-to-good using swim baits, spinner baits, and crank baits for northern pike.

RAMAH LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good using power bait, salmon eggs and spoons.

SAN JUAN : Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 1,400cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good for anglers using red annelids, egg patterns, dead chickens, small parachute adams and small bead head pheasant tail nymphs. Through the bait waters, fishing was good using red copper john barrs, prince nymphs, night crawlers and power bait.

SEVEN SPRINGS BROOD POND: The pond is open to fishing for children under age 12.

TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing in the catch and release pond was good for anglers using small copper john barrs and Griffith 's gnats. Fishing in the youth and middle ponds was good using worms, power eggs, power bait and dough bait for trout and catfish.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

BEAR CANYON : We had no reports from anglers this week.

BILL EVANS LAKE : Fishing was good using worms for bluegill. Fishing was fair using worms and liver for catfish. Fishing was fair using small swim baits, tubes and senkos for largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

BURN LAKE : Fishing was fair-to-good using liver, hot dogs and worms for catfish.

CABALLO LAKE : Walleye fishing continued to be quite good this past week. Anglers did best using bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs, crank baits and spinner/minnow rigs. Anglers fishing from the bank and using night crawlers reported catching walleye and catfish. Fishing for white bass was good for anglers trolling crank baits and spinners. Anglers casting to the bank with grubs and crank baits also caught a few white bass. A few largemouth bass were taken by anglers using senkos and spinner baits. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE : Largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing really picked up this past weekend. Anglers did very well using senkos, spinner baits, tubes and sweet beavers. A few bass were also taken on top water lures. Most of the action was in the backs of coves. Anglers fishing for bass also reported catching several walleye and white bass. More walleye were taken by anglers using crank baits, minnows and grubs. Fishing for catfish was good for anglers using cut bait, liver and shrimp over baited holes. A few striped bass were taken by anglers using live bait and spinner baits. We had no reports on other species.

GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this week.

ESCONDIDA LAKE : Fishing was fair-to-good using liver, night crawlers and dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

GILA RIVER : Water flow near Gila on Monday was 94cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE ROBERTS : Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, corn, salmon eggs and spinners from boats. We had no reports on other species.

PERCHA DAM: Fishing was fair for anglers using white and chartreuse grubs, crank baits, spinners and night crawlers for white bass and walleye. We had no reports on other species.

QUEMADO LAKE : Trout fishing was slow-to-fair this past week for anglers using power bait, prop flies and salmon eggs. Fishing was fair for anglers using spinners, and large flies for tiger musky.

RIO GRANDE : Water flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday was 858cfs. Fishing was fair using grubs and spinners for white bass. Fishing was slow-to-fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. On the river below Caballo Lake , fishing was fair using spinners, minnows, night crawlers and white grubs for walleye and white bass. A few catfish were taken by anglers using cut bait and liver. We had no reports on other species.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

BATAAN LAKE : Fishing was fair for anglers using worms, liver, hot dogs and dough baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

BONITO LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using spinners, power bait, salmon eggs, prop flies under a bubble and spinners.

BOSQUE REDONDO: Fishing was fair using liver, worms and stink bait for catfish. A few trout were taken by anglers using salmon egg/corn combinations.

BRANTLEY LAKE : Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

GREEN MEADOW LAKE : Kevin Ortiz, age 13 of Hobbs reported good fishing here this past week. He caught 2 nice catfish using hot dogs and dough bait. He also said several other anglers did well using worms, crawdads, liver and stink bait. Thanks for the report Kevin.

GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: We had no reports from anglers this week.

JAL LAKE : Fishing was fair using worms and liver for catfish.

LAKE VAN : Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using liver, dough baits and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

OASIS PARK LAKE : The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be complete about June 30 of this year. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.

PECOS RIVER : Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 105cfs. Fishing was fair using liver and worms for catfish.

PERCH LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

RIO BONITO: We had no reports from anglers this week.

RUIDOSO RIVER : Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was 9.4cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good using salmon eggs and small bead head nymphs.

SANTA ROSA LAKE : Fishing for walleye was good for anglers using spinner/night crawler rigs, curly tail grubs, tubes and crank baits. Anglers reported catching several limits with most of the fish taken in the 16-to-22 inch range. Fishing was fair using crank baits, minnows and small tubes for big crappie. Fishing was good using crank baits, jigs, buzz baits, Ricos, tubes and senkos for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

SUMNER LAKE : Fishing was very good this past week for anglers using minnows and worms from the bank for bluegill. Anglers fishing from the bank also caught a few walleye. Fishing for largemouth bass was very good for anglers using Rat-L-Traps, tubes and jigs. Most of the bass were in the 3-to-4 pound class and were taken in less than 10 feet of water. Fishing for walleye was good for anglers using bottom bouncers/worm rigs, crank baits and Rat-L-Traps. Anglers fishing for walleye also reported catching a few white bass. We had no reports on other species.
