| This is the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s fishing report for
June 06, 2007. If there is a body of water you would like included in
this report, please call or e-mail us with information on possible
sources for that lake or river. |
| |
| Fishing Tip: According to Larry Hurley of
Poorman’s Guide Service, this is the time of the year when fish begin
suspending over river channels. One of the best ways to catch these fish
is with a ½-ounce spoon. Troll around slowly over the river channel and
watch your graph for schools of fish. Drop a spoon next to your depth
finder’s transducer and you should be able to see it in the graph. Work
the spoon just under any large groups of baitfish and you should be able
to connect with a few bass or stripers. |

Statewide Family and Community Fishing Report:
Catfish were stocked into most program ponds last week, and they are
biting very well. Nightcrawlers and chicken livers have been the best
baits so far, but stinkbait and minnows should also produce fish. Bream
fishing has been fair on crickets and worms. For more information on
catfish stockings, call toll-free 1-866-540-FISH (3474). |

CENTRAL ARKANSAS
|
|
Lake
Conway
: Bates Field and Stream (501-470-1846) said the water is at normal
level and clarity. Bream are on beds in 2 to 3 feet of water and are
biting anything that gets near them. Bass fishing is good on yellow
Horny Toads. Catfishing is decent on live bream strung from trotlines.
All other species are slow.
Little
Red River:
Lindsey's Resort (501-302-3139) said the generators are running in
the afternoon for 2 to 3 hours. Bait fishing is good in the mornings on
wax worms and marshmallows. Fly-fishing is very good in deep pockets.
Gold beadhead and tan sow bugs have been successful at 4 to 6 feet.
Pheasant tails and hare’s ears have also been good for fly-fishing. In
the afternoons, artificial baits, spoons and Rooster Tails have been the
most successful.
Jed Hollan at the
Little Red Fly Shop said small, daily water releases continue from
the Greers Ferry power house. Generation has been starting between 10
a.m. and 2 p.m. The volume of water has been between 1,600 and 2,500
cubic feet per second. The water is clear with occasional areas of silt.
Trout fishing is very good. Be on the alert for larger water releases as
the temperatures in June increase and people turn on their air
conditioners which requires more hydroelectric power.
Aquatic insect hatches are, for the moment, few and far between.
Caddis hatches are over and blue-winged olive mayfly hatches have not
begun. Soft hackle emergers continue to catch fish in the shoals in
spite of the sporadic insect activity. Red Asses, Partridge & Orange and
Partridge & Yellow flies are working the best. Sizes 16 and 18 are best.
Other subsurface flies that are catching fish include: smoky olive or
tan beadhead sow bugs (size 14), flashback pheasant tails (size 16),
zebra midge (red or black, size 16-22), electric prince (size 14-16),
copper john (chartreuse or copper, size 14) and olive wooly buggers
(size 12). Dry flies that are catching fish (if you work hard and fish
them during a hatch) include Adams (size 16), PMD (pale morning dun
mayfly size 16-18 olive), and sulphur (size 16-18 yellow or cream).
Greers Ferry: As of Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 461.58 feet MSL.
Tommy Cauley of Fish Finder Guide Service said crappie are biting
pretty well in the creek channels, in river bends and over brush piles
and pole timber in 15 to 20 feet of water on jigs tipped with minnows.
Bream are bedding in the shallows and can be caught with a bream killer
fly or on crickets and nightcrawlers. Bass fishing is good. Many
largemouths are up shallow in the grass chasing bream and out on the
drops and bends. The largemouths can be caught with top-water lures,
Right Bite Shaky Hookers and Rite Bite frogs,
Kentucky bass and
largemouths can be caught on the drops with Carolina-rigged and
Texas-rigged worms and the smallmouth can be caught with Carolina-rigged
Rite Bite Cinkos. Catfishing is good on floating trot lines and jugs as
well as traditional trot lines baited with bream. White bass and hybrids
are coming up all over the lake during low-light hours and cloudy days.
When they are breaking, they can be caught on Super Spook Jrs. If they
are not breaking, try swimming a grub over the tops of the areas they
were schooling in. On sunny days, a jigging spoon in 43 feet of water or
a buckshot inline spinner will produce. Walleye are still scattered from
8-38 feet of water. Some can be caught dragging a crawler harness.
Harris Brake Lake:Coffee
Creek Landing (501-889-2745) said the water is fairly clear and at
normal level and current. Bream are getting in beds and biting very well
on worms and crickets. Crappie are biting fair on minnows. Bass fishing

NORTH ARKANSAS
|
| White River:
Gaston’s White River Resort said generation has been varied the last
two weeks – some days none, others two to four generators running
nonstop. During low water, Mepps, Red and Gold Buoyant Spoons and
spinners seem to be the best lures to use. Yellow PowerBait and orange
PowerBait with a wax worm attract many fish to the hook. Nightcrawlers
are catching a lot of fish while the water is low and if one or two
power units start, the redworms are best. Fly-fisherman have really
enjoyed the last two weeks. Flies that work best are red butt soft
hackle, orange soft hackle, olive woolly buggers, and red
San Juan worms.
Lake
Norfork
: As of Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s
elevation at 554.58 feet MSL.

taking trotlines baited with perch.
Norfork Tailwater: Gene’s Trout Dock (870-499-5381)
said the water is clear and the flow is good with one to two generators
running. Trout fishing has been good on nightcrawlers and chartreuse
PowerBait.
Mountain River Fly Shop said the river has had low water in the
mornings to mid afternoon, and the fish are feisty. Some sulphurs are
being seen in the afternoon. The hatch is not full blown but soon will
be. A
Humpback Sulphur nymph,
Parachute Sulphur, or Copper
Anna “K” soft hackle are the best bet once the hatch hits. |

Beaver
Lake
: As of Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s
elevation at 1,121.19 feet MSL. Southtown Sporting Goods

feet. Crappie fishing is fair at 8 to 20 feet under lights at night.
They are biting minnows, jigs, and trolled Hot-n-Tots. Bass are biting
topwater lures early, as well as shaky head worms,
Carolina rigs and grubs. At
night, bass are biting black spinnerbaits with
Colorado blades in darker
colors. Catfish are biting fairly well on prepared stinkbait and chicken
liver.
Brad Wiegmann of
Wiegmann’s Guide Service said most angling has switched to a night
bite because of high temperatures, boat traffic and moody fish. The
three best baits have been spinnerbaits, plastic worms, and crankbaits.
Look for this pattern to continue for most of the summer. White bass
continue to school, but have been changing locations every morning.
Small top-water baits have been the most productive. Summer striper
fishing means looking for stripers deep in underwater clusters of trees.
Look for the best bite at night or early in the morning.

As of Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s
elevation at 259.52 feet MSL.

in the river, suspended over brush piles. Bass continue to roam back and
forth from summer to spring depths, but are also chasing bedding bream.
Good size bass from 3-6 lbs. each, continue to blow up near floating
grass beds. The best bass bite has been on Salad Spoons and Johnson
spoons in grass and lily pads. The recent improvement in water clarity
gave the bass a boost in their response to artificial baits.
Buzzbaits, top-water frogs and toads and Bass Assassin Shads are
catching good bass in the grass beds as well. Last week we had decent
responses from bass with a wacky-rigged Bass Assassin Twitch or
Charm worm in kiwi, watermelon/red and crystal shad colors. Rat-L-Traps

suspended from jugs and trotlines in 10 to 20 feet of water.
Larry Hurley from
Poorman’s Guide Service said last week was a good week for bass.
Many fish are schooling early in the mornings. Shad-colored Shad Raps
produced good numbers, but it's an early bite. After 9 a.m. it's time to
use a drop-shot rig and finesse worm. Walleye have slowed some, but the
fishing is still good. Some large walleye are coming from the grass beds
on Shad Raps in about 10 feet of water. Bream fishing is good on the
west end of the lake and spotty on the east end. Catfishing is good on
noodles baited with small bream set about 8 to 10 feet deep. Stripers

down 6 inches. Bream are biting pretty well on beds. Crappie fishing is
fair in deeper water. Bass are biting surface lures in the mornings and
the afternoons and Brush Hogs during the day. Catfishing is good in deep
water. Walleye are starting to show some activity.
Shane Goodner, owner of
Catch’em All Guide Service, reports that rainbow trout fishing
continues to be excellent while the water temperature is holding in the
mid to high 50s. The warm water of summer will cause the trout living in
the lake to move toward the dam in search of cool water. Bank anglers
are catching limits of trout daily on redworms and nightcrawlers floated
under a bobber. The moss is thick, so a bobber is a great way to catch
the trout without dealing with the moss. Power Eggs fished on the bottom
will always draw strikes from trout as they have an inborn instinct to
feed on fish eggs. Boaters casting Rapalas and small crawfish crankbaits
during periods of power generation. Trolling the channels has produced
trout over 19 inches in the past few days as the larger fish are feeding
heavily on threadfin shad. Fly fishermen have been hooking fish early in
the morning on woolly buggers and streamers in the shallow flats. As the
water warms, the striper and hybrid migration to the dam will begin as
they follow the huge schools of threadfin shad. The top-water bite will
be spectacular as these large predator fish feed heavily on top. Lucky
Craft Sammies, Zara Spooks and Redfins in rainbow trout colors will draw
vicious strikes during feeding frenzies. Live gizzard shad and large
threadfin shad floated under balloon rigs will catch large stripers and
hybrids while the turbines are turning.
Lake
Hamilton : Larry
Hurley from
Poorman’s Guide Service said bass are fair on
Carolina rigs about 10 feet
deep, but most bass are on the small side. Stripers are good at night
below the dam with some good ones being caught on trout-colored
swimbaits. Bream are fair on crickets and worms.
Lake

SOUTH-CENTRAL ARKANSAS
|
| Moro Bay:
Moro Bay State Park said the water level is normal and fishing has
been good. Bream are biting well on crickets and worms. The bay and the
lake have yielded more fish lately, but don’t overlook docks and fallen
trees in the river. Should you do well bream and crappie fishing,
remember your lucky hole because the Perch Jerk Classic fishing
