This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Catches of the week

Conchas Lake : May 23, Marc Ahlen of Albuquerque caught a 17-inch smallmouth bass. He was fishing from a float tube and using a triple-threat green and orange grub.

Cochiti Lake : May 25, Harold Maez of Los Lunas caught a 40.5-inch, 14-pound northern pike. He was fishing on the Tetilla Peak side of the lake and using minnows.

Chama River : May 26, J. T. Elyess of Chama caught an 18-inch brown trout. He was fishing below El Vado Lake and using night crawlers.

NORTHEAST AREA

CANJILON LAKES : We had no reports from anglers this week.

CHARETTE LAKES : Trout fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs, corn, power bait, and spinner/worm combinations. Fishing was good using worms for perch.

CIMARRON RIVER : Water flow below Eagle Nest this past Monday was 3.9cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using San Juan worms and copper john barrs.

CLAYTON LAKE : Fishing was good this past week for anglers using spinner/night crawler rigs from boats and night crawlers from the bank for walleye to 19 inches. Fishing was good using power bait, salmon eggs and worms for trout.

COCHITI LAKE : Fishing was fair-to-good using minnows for a variety of fish including northern pike, crappie, white bass, perch, bluegill and smallmouth bass. A few bass and pike were also taken by anglers using spinner baits, tubes, senkos and crank baits.

CONCHAS LAKE : Fishing for walleye was good for anglers using grubs, night crawlers, crank baits and spinner/worm and spinner/minnow combinations. We had several good reports from anglers fishing the south side of the lake. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was good for anglers using senkos, top water lures, crank baits and spinners. Fishing for crappie was fair for anglers using minnows. Fishing for bluegill was good for anglers using worms.

COYOTE CREEK: Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using copper john barrs, spinners, salmon eggs and power bait.

EAGLE NEST LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good this past week for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners. Anglers did well from the bank as well as from anchored boats. Fishing was good using worms for perch.

HOPEWELL LAKE : Trout fishing was fair for anglers using olive and black wooly buggers, spinners and power bait.

LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE : Trout fishing was good at both lakes this past week. Anglers did well using power bait, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs. There will be a fishing derby at Sugarite State Park next weekend. Anglers interested should call the state park office at 505-445-5607 for more information.

MAXWELL LAKES : We had no reports from anglers this week.

MCALLISTER LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using spinners, salmon eggs, power bait and corn/salmon egg combinations for fish up to 12 inches.

MONASTERY LAKE : Trout fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs, corn and power bait. A few trout were also taken on spinners and Pistol Petes.

MORPHY LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using corn, worms, power bait, prop flies and spinners.

PECOS RIVER : As of Monday, water flow near Pecos was 401cfs. Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using worms, wooly buggers, spinners and night crawlers.

RED RIVER : Water flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 204cfs and the water was murky. Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using wooly buggers, spinners, San Juan worms and night crawlers.

RIO GRANDE : The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 1,000cfs. Fishing was fair using night crawlers, power bait, spinners and spoons for trout. We had no reports on other species.

SPRINGER LAKE : Fishing was fair for anglers using cut bait and spinner baits for northern pike. Fishing was fair using jigs and cut bait for largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

STORRIE LAKE : Fishing was fair using worms for small catfish at the north end of the lake. Fishing was slow-to-fair using power bait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout. A few carp were caught by anglers using power bait, corn and salmon eggs.

STUBBLEFIELD: Fishing was good using spinner/night crawler combinations, grubs and crank baits for walleye. We had no reports on other species.

UTE LAKE : Anglers reported walleye fishing as good-to-excellent this past week. Several limits were taken by anglers trolling bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs, spinner/minnow rigs and crank baits for walleye suspended over brush in 15-to-20 feet of water. Fishing was good using jigs and minnows for crappie. The crappie were a bit smaller than previous weeks but still taken in good numbers. Fishing was fair using tubes and jigs for smallmouth bass. Most of the bass were taken in 10-to-25 feet of water off main lake points. Fishing was very good using cut bait, liver and night crawlers in 4-to-6 feet of water for catfish.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

ABIQUIU LAKE : Fishing for smallmouth bass was fair-to-good for anglers using tubes, senkos, jerk baits and crank baits. Fishing for rainbow trout was slow-to-fair for anglers using night crawlers. Fishing for catfish was fair for anglers using liver and night crawlers. We had no reports on other species.

BLUEWATER LAKE : Trout fishing was slow this past week but anglers managed to catch a few while using power bait and salmon eggs. Fishing for catfish was slow-to-fair for anglers using liver and cut bait. Fishing was fair using large spinners and jerk baits for tiger musky. Due to the low water conditions, anglers are advised to use extreme caution when launching boats.

CHAMA RIVER : Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 867cfs and 1,400cfs below Abiquiu. Below El Vado, fishing was good using night crawlers, wooly buggers, copper john barrs, spinners and salmon eggs for brown and rainbow trout.

EL VADO LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

FENTON LAKE : There was heavy fishing pressure but slow action according to most anglers here over the past weekend. A few trout were taken by anglers using power bait and spinners.

HERON LAKE : Fishing was generally slow for all species again this past week. There were a few trout taken by anglers fishing along the bank and using power bait. Fishing pressure was light.

JACKSON LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 109cfs. Fishing was fair here and on the San Antonio , Clear Creek and the lower Cebolla. Anglers did best using power bait, worms, copper john barrs and salmon eggs.

LAGUNA DEL CAMPO: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, prop flies, spinners and salmon eggs.

LAKE FARMINGTON : We had no reports from anglers this week.

MANZANO LAKE : Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, spinners and salmon eggs.

NAVAJO LAKE : Crappie fishing continued to be quite good this past week. Anglers reported good crappie fishing up the Pine arm and in La Jara Canyon. They were using minnows and small tubes. Fishing was good using swim baits, jerk baits, spinner baits, and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was good for anglers using tubes, senkos, brush hogs, jigs and crank baits. Fishing was good using worms and small jigs for bluegill.

RAMAH LAKE : Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes, wooly buggers and spinners.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE : Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs and spoons.

SAN JUAN : Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 1,390cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good for anglers using RS2s, San Juan worms, leeches, small pheasant tail nymphs and sparkle worms. Through the bait waters, fishing was good using jerk bait, wooly buggers, night crawlers and power bait.

SEVEN SPRINGS BROOD POND: The pond is open to fishing for children under age 12.

TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing in the catch and release pond was good for anglers using small copper john barrs and Griffith 's gnats. The youth and middle ponds will be restocked for a free fishing clinic to be held on June 2.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

BEAR CANYON : We had no reports from anglers this week.

BILL EVANS LAKE : Fishing was good using worms for bluegill. Fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, worms and spinners for trout. Fishing was fair using small swim baits, salt craws, tubes and senkos for largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

BURN LAKE : Fishing was fair using liver and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

CABALLO LAKE : Walleye fishing was good this past week. Anglers did well trolling bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs, crank baits and spinner/minnow rigs. Anglers fishing from the bank and using night crawlers also reported catching several walleye. Fishing for white bass was fair-to-good for anglers trolling crank baits and spinners. The best reports came from anglers trolling along the east side of the lake. A few largemouth bass were taken by anglers using tubes and spinner baits. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE : Fishing was good for anglers using liver, night crawlers, cut bait and dough bait for catfish. We had several good reports from anglers fishing in the lower section of the Narrows and near Monticello . Fishing was good for anglers fishing for white bass. They did best trolling and casting an assortment of crank baits and also using grubs, sassy shad and top water lures. Fishing was slow-to-fair using jigs, spinner baits, small swim baits, senkos, salt craws and tubes for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Most of the black bass action was reported by anglers fishing at depths of 6-to-15 feet and working points. Fishing for striped bass was slow-to-fair with a few taken by anglers using live bait and swim baits. Fishing was very good for anglers trolling for walleye. They were working the outside edges of brush lines with spinner/night crawler rigs, grubs and crank baits. We had no reports on other species.

GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this week.

ESCONDIDA LAKE : Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using liver, night crawlers and dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

GILA RIVER : Water flow near Gila on Monday was 115cfs. Fishing on the Forks was fair for anglers using small bead head nymphs and small spinners for trout.

LAKE ROBERTS : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, corn, salmon eggs and spinners from boats. We had no reports on other species.

PERCHA DAM: Fishing was fair for anglers using white grubs, white crank baits and night crawlers for white bass and a few walleye. We had no reports on other species.

QUEMADO LAKE : Trout fishing was rated as fair-to-good this past week for anglers using power bait, prop flies and salmon eggs. Fishing was fair for anglers using spinners, swim baits and jerk baits for tiger musky.

RIO GRANDE : Water flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday was 889cfs. Fishing was fair using grubs and spinners for white bass. Our best reports came from anglers fishing below Williamsburg . On the river below Caballo Lake , fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using spinners, minnows, night crawlers and white grubs for walleye and white bass. A few catfish were taken by anglers using cut bait and liver. We had no reports on other species.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

BATAAN LAKE : Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using worms, liver and dough baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

BONITO LAKE : Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, prop flies under a bubble and spinners.

BOSQUE REDONDO: We had no reports from anglers this week.

BRANTLEY LAKE : Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs and flies under a bubble.

JAL LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE VAN : Fishing was fair for anglers using liver, dough baits and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

OASIS PARK LAKE : The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be complete about June 30 of this year. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.

PECOS RIVER : Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 103cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

PERCH LAKE : We had no reports from anglers this week.

RIO BONITO: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using small bead head nymphs.

RUIDOSO RIVER : Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was 19cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA ROSA LAKE : Fishing for walleye was good this past week and especially so for anglers fishing the sunken islands. They reported catching limits while using spinner/night crawler rigs, curly tail grubs and crank baits. Fishing was fair using crank baits, minnows and small tubes for crappie. Fishing was fair using crank baits, jigs, top water lures, tubes and senkos for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

SUMNER LAKE : Fishing was good this past week for anglers fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. They were using crank baits, tubes and jigs. Several of the largemouth bass were in the 3-to-4 pound class. Fishing for walleye was good for anglers using crank baits, jigs and spinner/night crawler combinations in 10-to-15 feet of water. We had no reports on other species.
