5/2/2007 New Wisconsin Rule to Impact Mississippi River Anglers DES MOINES - Anglers fishing the upper Mississippi River should be aware of a new regulation in place in Wisconsin that bans the transportation of live fish and fish eggs from the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. Anglers using boat ramps on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River will be required to kill their fish and to drain their live well, and all water from their boat including any bilge, ballast tank and bait bucket. The new rule became effective on April 8. The rule is in response to a new fish virus called Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) that is a pathogen affecting fish of all sizes and ages. It does not pose any threat to human health. VHS has not been found in any fish in the Mississippi River and has only been identified in Lake Erie, Lake Huron and Lake Ontario. For more information, contact Mike Mason, Fish Hatchery Section Supervisor with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources at 515-281-6072.
