5/1/2007 Weekly Fishing Reports Thursday, May 3, 2007
Warm temperatures and sunny skies will help to warm water temperatures and improve fishing conditions. Walleye and northern pike season on the Michigan-Wisconsin Boundary waters will open this coming Saturday. Southeast Lower Peninsula Lake Erie - Walleye fishing continues to improve from the Banana Dike all the way down to Bolles Harbor. Anglers are using crawler harnesses, bottom bouncers and Reef Runners. Bass anglers are out for the early catch and release season. Perch fishing was slow. Huron River - Those fishing up near the Flat Rock Dam and about a mile or so down have caught some walleye and a few white bass. Detroit River - Walleye fishing has been very good even though water levels were running a bit high. Fish have been caught along the entire river system when jigging, hand-lining or drifting. Some are using jigs with blades and bottom bouncers. St. Clair River - Boat anglers have caught some nice chinook salmon near Port Huron. Walleye fishing has been on fire. Anglers are vertical jigging or whipping Pencil Plugs. Good perch fishing was reported near Marysville. Lexington - Fishing was good with a mixed bag of chinook, coho, steelhead and brown trout taken in 15 to 25 feet of water. They are long-lining and using planer boards with bodybaits. Pier fishing was slow. Rumor has it some whitefish were taken in the harbor. Port Sanilac - Boat anglers are catching a mixed bag here as well when using bodybaits. A couple pier anglers managed to catch some coho off the end of the north wall. Harbor Beach - Due to the ongoing dredging, there has not been much activity to report. A few brown trout were taken between Harbor Beach and Lighthouse Park. Grindstone City - Shore anglers were catching and releasing smallmouth bass in the marina basin. Lake trout fishing should pick up. Saginaw Bay - Fair to good walleye fishing was reported from Linwood to the Saginaw River. It was best near Spoils Island and north of Farley Road, which is east of Essexville. Crawler harnesses, jigs baited with worms, and bodybaits were all taking fish. Larger walleye were taken on crawler harnesses way out by Buoy #1. Near Quanicassee, limits of walleye were taken in 7 feet of water straight off the end of the boat channel that comes out of the Quanicassee River. Perch, bluegills, and crappie were taken by shore anglers fishing around the docks at Sunset Bay Marina. Shore anglers at Sebewaing are taking pike and crappie in the marina. At Caseville, a few perch were taken at the mouth of the Pigeon River. Fishing at Port Austin should pick up with the opening of lake trout season. Tittabawassee River - Walleye fishing picked up in almost all locations including below the Sanford Dam as it appears quite a few fish made it over the Dow Dam during the high water levels. There are still a lot of post-spawn males in the river, and fishing should remain good for about the next two weeks unless more rain drives them out. Trolling and vertical jigging were both effective, but shore fishing was a challenge due to the fast current. Quanicassee River - Not much is happening for shore anglers; just a few catfish. Southwest Lower Peninsula St. Joseph - Pier fishing has been slow with only a few brown trout taken off the North Pier. Boat activity has been slow due to strong winds. St. Joesph River - Water levels were up and cloudy due to recent storms. Those fishing from Mottville to Three Rivers caught a few walleye when trolling. Catch rates should increase as the waters clear up. Some nice crappies were taken when pitching minnows into the trees along the bank. Panfish were hitting on wax worms and crawlers. Those targeting walleye when casting stickbaits have been catching smallmouth bass and pike. Frankfort - Pier fishing for brown trout and steelhead has been fair when using spawn, or casting yellow and white spoons.
