Portions of Cape Henlopen Fishing Pier to Reopen This
Week; More Work Anticipated on Seaward End of Pier
Sections of the popular Cape Henlopen State Park fishing pier that have
been closed off with orange fencing since last summer will reopen this week
following the replacement of 10 worn support pilings. The sections were
closed last August as a public safety precaution after the pier was
inspected by engineers and Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation
officials.
Originally constructed around World War II, the 1,800-foot pier was revamped
with new decking and railings about 10 years ago. This week’s reopening is
of the landward end, which is about 1,200 feet long. The remaining 600 feet
at the t-shaped seaward end will remain closed pending further work.
“We’re continuing to make improvements to the pier for our park visitors’
safety and enjoyment. We’re moving forward,” said Cape Henlopen State Park
Administrator Patrick Cooper.
