Star Fort Pond near Ninety Six opens April 4
Star Fort Pond at Ninety Six National Historic Site in Greenwood County
will open Wednesday, April 4 and remain open through Oct. 31.
The
27-acre Star Fort Pond near the town of Ninety Six offers fishing for bream,
largemouth bass, channel catfish and crappie on Wednesdays, Fridays and
Saturdays from a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset. The
reservoir will be open for fishing April 4 through Oct. 31.
Star Fort Pond is part of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
State Lakes Program, designed to provide quality public fishing where the
opportunity is lacking or where few well-managed fishing lakes exist. A
cooperative agreement between the DNR and the National Park Service makes
possible the inclusion of Star Fort Pond as a public fishing lake. The Sport
Fish Restoration Program, to which anglers contribute through their purchase
of fishing tackle and motorboat fuel, helps fund the management of Star Fort
Pond and all other reservoirs in the DNR State Lakes program.
Call the DNR Columbia office at (803) 734-3886 for more information on
fishing
regulations (pdf file). Anglers 16 years of age or older must have a
valid South Carolina state fishing license. The daily limit at Star Fort
Pond is 20 bream, three channel catfish and three largemouth bass (12-inch
minimum length). One day per year a youth fishing rodeo will be held, and
size limits will not apply on that occasion. The daily limit on crappie is
30 per day. A total of 40 game fish (bream, bass, crappie) may be kept in
any one day.
