NDOW INTERNET MAP SERVICE UNVEILED

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is unveiling a great new resource for Nevada’s map lovers: an on-line interactive mapping program that allows the user to create their own maps, using Nevada resource information from a geo-referenced mapping data base.

The site went live on Thursday, March 15.

Web-based geographic information system maps are similar to traditional paper maps, with some important differences. With a web-based map the user can explore a combination of geographic areas, layer important data on top of their map, zoom in or pull back from an area, and learn more about specific features.

The interactive mapping program provides useful maps covering many different
themes. The purpose of this web map service is to provide geographic information that can be used to help make more informed decisions, and get answers to resource questions for a specific area or topic that involves a geographic dimension. A web-based map-server provides a means for the public to: generate maps interactively, create maps depicting wildlife management areas and watchable wildlife locations, perform place name queries, create directional maps to specific locations, etc. It also helps to promote public awareness of Nevada’s immense wildlife diversity.

The service is meant for a wide variety of participants, for instance, a hunter looking to scout out a specific area or a hiker interested in what animals or plants may be on a specific trail. NDOW foresees a large portion of the state’s wildlife enthusiasts having a use for the mapping service.

This internet mapping service is designed for customers with high speed internet connections. Those customers with a dial-up connection may experience difficulties in navigating this service.

Significant funding for the map server was provided by the Nevada Biodiversity Initiative and State Wildlife Grants. The map server is maintained by the NDOW’s Wildlife Diversity Bureau, which also supplies the equipment and other infrastructure required for its operation.

The NDOW Internet Map site can be accessed at http://www.ndow.org/learn/map_project/index.shtm.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) protects, restores and manages fish and wildlife, and promotes fishing, hunting, and boating safety. NDOW’s wildlife and habitat conservation efforts are primarily funded by sportsmen’s license and conservation fees and a federal surcharge on hunting and fishing gear. Support wildlife and habitat conservation in Nevada by purchasing a hunting, fishing, or combination license. For more information, visit www.ndow.org.
