Summer Day Camp Registration Open at Killens Pond State Park

This summer at Killens Pond State Park, your kids can become nature detectives, eco-explorers or adventure seekers, learn about fishing, boating or wildlife rescue, or earn Scouting badges by signing up for the park’s 2007 Summer Day Camps.

To learn more about the program, the park staff will host Day Camp Demo Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 24 at the Nature Center. This sneak peek will feature a day filled with family fun activities, including dip-netting, a fishing casting contest, crazy crafts, tracks and traces program, hayrides and smores. Camp registration also will be available on site.

All summer day camps run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with pre and post care extending from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Now here’s a preview of the camps being offered.

• Creative Kids Camp – Monday, June 11 through Friday, June 15
Kids ages 5 to 8 will explore the park, create some great daily take-home crafts from items found in nature, go on hiking, kayaking and biking trips and do some exciting outdoor activities. Cost is $150.

• Nature Detectives – Monday, June 18 through Friday, June 22
Learn how to unlock the secrets Mother Nature holds while exploring the park and our natural environment. Ages 6 to 10 will learn about the scientific method and how to use what we already know to explore the unfamiliar as real nature detectives on the trail of clues in the park to solve some of nature’s great mysteries. Cost is $150.

• Fishing Camp - Monday, June 25 through Friday, June 29
Are you a fishing fanatic? Kids ages 7 to 12 will be after this exciting camp, where they’ll discover some of the best places to fish in Delaware and learn some great techniques to help catch more and bigger fish. No prior fishing experience required. Cost is $165.

• Girl Scout Camp - Monday, July 2 through Friday, July 6
Girl Scouts ages 9 to 13 can work toward earning badges and meet new friends among girls from different troops. This camp includes an optional overnight camping trip. Open to troops or individuals. Cost is $200.

• Boy Scout Camp - Monday, July 9 through Friday, July 13
Boy Scouts ages 9 to 13 can meet other Scouts and do fun and exciting activities in the park to work toward earning many different badges including a special Killen’s Pond Badge. Open to troops or individuals. Cost is $175.

• Delaware Is for Boating Camp - Monday, July 16 through Friday, July 20
Interested in boats? Kids ages 9 to 13 will spend the entire week learning boating and safety skills for all different types of boats and traveling the state in a way that most people never experience. Boating trips include kayaking, canoeing, row boating, paddle boating and a pontoon boat tour. Cost is $165.

• Wildlife Rescue Camp – Monday, July 23 through Friday, July 27
Are crazy about birds, snakes, turtles and all those other critters? Then this is the day camp for you. Ages 7 to 12 will learn all about these wonderful animals and what is done to protect them when they are endangered and how to rescue them when they are injured. Trips include rescue shelters and local zoos. Cost is $150.

• Eco-Explorer’s Camp - Monday, July 30 through Friday, Aug. 3
Designed for kids ages 7 to 12 who are curious about everything they see, this camp will feature hikes through the trails learning all about Mother Nature’s secrets, fun nature crafts, dip-netting, fishing, kayaking and even a field trip to visit the Brandywine Zoo. Cost is $150.

• History Brought to Life Camp – Monday, Aug. 6 through Friday, Aug. 10
Designed for kids ages 9 to 13 who love history, this camp will bring history to life by visiting Fort Delaware and Fort Miles, as well as learning some natural history by going on an archeological dig. Cost is $150.

• Adventure Seeker’s Camp - Monday, Aug. 13 through Friday, Aug. 17
End the summer with an adventure that kids 10 to 15 can brag about all school year. Adventures include a kayaking trip from Killen’s Pond down to Bowers Beach, breakwater kayaking at Cape Henlopen, a day hike through the Swamp Forest Trail, an orienteering challenge and an overnight camping expedition. Cost is $200.
