Deadline Looms for Spring Turkey Applications

PIERRE, S.D.—Hunters who want to take advantage of South Dakota spring turkey season will need to have their license applications in soon.

Resident and nonresident paper applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, Feb. 23. Online applications can be made up until 8 a.m. (CST) Tuesday, Feb. 27.

Paper applications are available from license agents and GFP offices or they may be printed from the S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department Web site at www.sdgfp.info. Online applications can be made at the same Web site by holding the cursor over “Licenses and Reservations” and then clicking on the link to “Apply for Limited Issue Licenses.”

Each applicant may submit one application for the first drawing for licenses for each turkey season. However, applicants can apply for multiple season by using just one application form.

“As an example, you can apply for one prairie turkey license, one Black Hills turkey license and one archery turkey license,” said Scott Simpson, supervisor of the GFP License Office. “With the current system, you can apply for all the licenses by filling out just one application and by making just one payment.”

Hunters are allowed only one Black Hills, one archery and one resident-only Custer State Park spring turkey license. Up to five additional prairie spring turkey licenses may be purchased after the second drawing is completed.

South Dakota’s 2007 spring turkey season runs April 14 through May 20 in most areas. Exceptions are noted on the spring turkey application.
