FWP Seeks Smith River Planning Committee Applicants
The Smith River.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking applicants for a committee that
will help update the Smith River State Park Management Plan.
"We encourage anyone who has an interest in recreation management for the
Smith River to apply," said Joe Maurier, FWP Parks Division Chief.
FWP has used the Smith River State Park Management Plan to manage recreation
on the river since 1996. The new committee will be asked to assess the plan
and suggest changes that balance the interests of recreationists, landowners
and others.
Some topics the planning committee is likely to consider include management
of the Smith River’s launch site at Camp Baker, rules pertaining to pets and
human waste, and the allocation of float permits on the river.
Prospective committee members should be familiar with the Smith River and
interested in working in cooperation with others to develop recommendations
that will help maintain this popular resource.
A total of about eight committee members will be selected to represent
floaters, landowners, anglers, outfitters, recreation and tourism, and
others. Designated representatives from city, county, state and federal
agencies will assist and support the committee.
Members will serve in a voluntary capacity, and meetings will be held in the
Great Falls, White Sulphur Springs, or the Helena area on a monthly basis
for about eight months beginning in April.
To apply for the Smith River State Park Management Plan committee, contact
the Great Falls FWP office, 4600 Giant Springs Rd; phone: 406-454-5840; or
email csperry@mt.gov. Applications can be sent by mail or email.
Completed applications must be returned to FWP with a postmark date no later
than March 9.
