ASK THE GAME & FISH

Q: Is there a limit on the number or size of holes for ice fishing?

Answer
Wyoming regulations do not restrict the number of holes that may be cut or specify that ice fishing holes must comply to a certain size. Regardless of the number of holes that may be drilled, each angler may not fish with more than two lines on most waters. On waters included under the Special Winter Ice Fishing Provision, no more than six lines may be used. As to the size of the hole, for safety’s sake it is recommended that holes larger than eight inches not be cut. The smaller hole prevents anglers from falling through a snow camouflaged hole where the ice is not up to the thickness of the rest of the lake. Complete regulations on ice fishing are found on pages 7-8 in the fishing regulations booklet.
