FWP hosts winter festival Feb. 24 in Malta

Andrew McKean

FWP Winter Festival is Saturday, Feb. 24 in Malta

Youngsters of all ages are invited to Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ Winter Festival on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Malta City Hall Gymnasium in downtown Malta. The free, hands-on field day will be held from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m.

The family-oriented festival features a variety of stations where participants can paint fishing jigs, make ice-fishing spikes, practice safe gun handling while shooting at simulated targets, cast to a “pond” of plastic fish and learn how to identify wildlife of northeastern Montana. Big-game hunters are encouraged to bring antlers to be scored by official Boone & Crockett measurers. Hunter Education instructors will demonstrate how to safely clean and store a variety of firearms. And an array of educational materials will be available, from TIP-MONT bumper stickers to Fish of Montana wall posters.

“We hope to get a good turnout from the public,” says FWP’s Regional Supervisor Pat Gunderson. “The festival is scheduled to dovetail with the Northern B girls’ divisional basketball tournament, so we’re hopeful that we get participants from across Phillips County, but also that people in town for the tournament will stop by.”

The City Hall Gym is located on 2 nd Street East just east of U.S. Highway 191 in downtown Malta. Call FWP’s Region 6 office in Glasgow at 228-3723 with questions or for additional information on the Feb. 24 festival.
