Management season starts for elk west of Lewistown
Hunters will be afield starting this weekend to participate in a six-day,
special management season for elk that have moved onto private land south of
Eddie’s Corner and west of Highway 191.
The season, which will run Feb. 10-15, is designed to decrease an elk
population that has the potential to cause significant damage to
agricultural property. The elk management season is in a portion of hunting
district 418 in Judith Basin County.
Hunters were selected from a roster compiled in June and July. Only those
who signed up last summer are eligible for this hunt.
Last summer marked the first time hunters were asked to select a hunting
district via the Internet or at an FWP office for a potential game damage
hunt.
Hunters have been contacted by FWP and given details. Hunting will take
place on designated private land that was open for free, public hunting
during last fall’s general season, and hunters are required to report their
harvest success to FWP.
Call FWP’s Great Falls office at 454-5840 with questions about the
management season. If you’re interested in being put on a roster for future
management seasons, visit FWP’s web site at www.fwp.mt.gov later this year
for details.
