HILO — The Department of Land
and Natural Resources will close its west Hawai‘i parks early on New
Year’s Eve, Sunday, December 31, 2006.
The Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area and Hapuna Beach State
Recreation Area, including the Waialea Bay section, will close at 6:00
p.m.
The Kekaha Kai State Park-Kaulana-Mahaiula and Maniniowali sections
will close at 5:00 p.m.
“We are closing the parks early to discourage the use of fireworks,
which are prohibited in state parks, and to protect the public and the
natural resources of the area,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.
On January 1, 2007 normal park hours will resume as follows: Old Kona
Airport State Recreation Area - 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Kekaha Kai State Park
- 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area - 7 a.m. to 8
p.m.
