Weekly Fishing Report Thursday, December 7, 2006
Not much to report on fishing this week as we are now in between seasons.
Skim ice has started to form on some of the inland lakes, but there is no
safe ice to report. Pier anglers are reminded of the dangers when fishing
this time of year. Strong wind and wave action along with cold temperatures
will make the piers ice covered and slippery. Southeast Lower Peninsula Lake Erie - Water temperatures are still in the low 40's for Michigan waters. Walleye were taken from Toledo Beach all the way up Stony Point. Those casting off shore were using bombers, rapalas and stickbaits. Huron River - Water levels were running high and fast so anglers will need to use caution. Some fresh steelhead should be in the river. Try casting crankbaits, spinners and small spoons such as Little Cleo's. Floating spawn, wax worms or even a crawler under a bobber may also bring in a fish or two. Detroit River - Water levels have been up and down, but those fishing the lower river have caught fish. Yellow perch have been caught around the marinas and in the cuts and canals. Walleye are still hitting on jigs with minnows in the Lower Trenton Channel and around Sugar Island. Saginaw Bay - Skim ice was reported in the shallow waters and
around the marinas; however there is no safe ice to report. While anglers
are getting anxious, it is still too early for ice fishing. The 10-day
forecast is calling for temperatures in the upper 30's for all of next week.
Southwest Lower Peninsula St. Joseph River - Water levels have been running a bit high with moderate to high flows. Fair to good numbers of steelhead have been caught between Pipestone Creek and the Berrien Springs Dam when using flatfish, Hot-n-Tots, or flat lining with spawn. Boat anglers are catching more than those fishing from shore. Grand River at Grand Rapids - Higher water levels with lots of debris coming down the river has pretty much put a stop to those fishing off the bridges, at least until the weekend. Those fishing up near the dam are now using choker bags about the size of a quarter or fifty cent piece. Steelhead have been caught when drifting flies right along the bottom. Chartreuse egg patterns have worked well. A few walleye have been caught in the pocket waters with bucktail jigs. Reeds Lake - Crappie are still hitting on minnows near the drop off. Grand River at Lansing - Had hardly any angler activity this week, except for the report of a couple steelhead caught in the area. No one has been out seeking resident fish since the cold spell hit. Muskegon - They are still taking some steelhead off the breakwalls. Use extreme caution and avoid the piers when ice is present. Muskegon Lake - A few boats are still trolling for walleye in the evenings. Glass colored Husky Jerks have been working best. Fishing should pick back up by the weekend when warmer temperatures return. Muskegon River - Those seeking steelhead can still be found in the upper section of the river towards Newaygo. Most anglers are boat fishing with Hot-n-Tots in pink or crayfish patterns. White River - Steelhead have been caught when drifting spawn
downstream from Hesperia. Northeast Lower Peninsula Thunder Bay River - Snow and ice on the ramps will hamper boat launching efforts for those thinking of fishing on the river. Even those using vehicles with four wheel drive need to use caution. The whitefish are still in and steelhead fishing has been reasonably good with the better fishing near the breakwalls. Oscoda - Some great catches of whitefish have been reported. The good fishing should continue well into the next two weeks as December usually brings the better fishing. Ice fishing jigs tipped with wax worms seemed to work best. Au Sable River - Snow and ice on the ramps will make launching a boat dangerous, so use caution. Steelhead and whitefish are still being caught in the river and around the breakwalls. Tawas - Very good whitefish action continues even though angler activity has been light. The good fishing should last for another week or two. Stick with the ice fishing jigs and a wax worm. Higgins Lake - Reported about 6 to 8 inches of snow and skim ice around the shoreline of the lake. There is no safe ice to report at this time. Houghton Lake - Which is a shallow lake, now has skim ice covering
the entire lake. There is no safe ice to report at this time. Anglers are
anxiously waiting for the first good ice this winter. Northwest Lower Peninsula Traverse City - Has anywhere between 3 inches and a foot of snow and no safe ice to report. No one has been fishing in the Bays. Boardman River - Only the die-hards have been out steelhead fishing. Frankfort - Pier anglers are still catching steelhead and whitefish when the weather permits. Remember to avoid the piers when they become ice covered and dangerous. Betsie River - Steelhead can still be found in the river. Try fishing between US-31 and the Homestead Dam. Big Manistee River - About the only fishing going on right now is a few hardy souls steelhead fishing up near Tippy Dam. Lake Cadillac - Has no fishable ice to report. There is some ice forming around the shoreline, but it has been too windy to form any safe ice. While everyone is ready, we will still have to wait to start the ice fishing season. Lake Cadillac - The lake is covered with skim ice only and it is
not safe to venture out on. Upper Peninsula With temperatures in the teens, it won't be long and people will be heading out on the smaller lakes to start the winter ice fishing season. As of this report, the smaller lakes are covered with skim ice, but there is no safe ice to report. Anglers are reminded that first ice is dangerous ice. This is a good time of year to get all that ice fishing gear ready to go and more important, review ice safety.
