Recreational Fishing Report

Great Lakes temperature map
Unseasonably warm temperatures seem to bring the hunters out of the
woods as a few more anglers were reported on both the lakes and rivers.
Those fishing the Michigan-Wisconsin Boundary Waters are reminded that
the season to take large and smallmouth bass, musky and lake sturgeon
will close on November 30th.
Southeast Lower Peninsula
Lake Erie - Water temperatures in Michigan waters have been
right around 40 degrees. Near Monroe, a good number of boat anglers can
be seen fishing for perch just off Sterling State Park.
Huron River - Higher flows during the past week or so will
likely bring a fresh supply of steelhead into the river. Fishing from
now through the middle of December should be good from the dam at Flat
Rock downstream to Rockwood. Try casting crankbaits, spinners, spoons,
and drifting spawn or wax worms under a bobber. Look for the deep holes
with large logs and other current breaks. Small boats can be launched
off Church Street and downstream of the Telegraph Road Bridge. For shore
fishing, try one of the parks such as Huroc Park below the Flat Rock Dam
or Labo Park which is east of I-75 on South Huron River Drive.
Detroit River - Walleye have been caught in the Trenton
Channel near the Power Plant and in the Humbug Marina at Gibraltar when
jigging with minnows. Yellow perch have been caught around Sugar Island
and at the Cross Dike east of Sugar Island. Good perch fishing was also
reported in the marinas around Grosse Ile.
Lake St. Clair - A good number of anglers have been out
fishing for perch. Fair catch rates were reported off Sterling State
Park, but anglers will need to do some sorting and throw the small ones
back. Some walleye were also caught.
Saginaw River - The walleye were hitting good with the warmer
temperatures. Boat anglers were trolling or drifting. The fishing was
good up near Wickes Park with some limit catches reported.
Southwest Lower Peninsula
St. Joseph - The action was not fast and furious but some pier
anglers have caught steelhead and whitefish. Steelhead fishing may pick
back up by the weekend.
St. Joseph River - Boat anglers have managed to catch a few
brown trout when drifting spawn. Walleye fishing has been fair to good
depending on who you talk to. Try fishing between the Berrien Springs
Dam and the Sportsmen Club. Shore fishing has been slow.
Thornapple Lake - In Barry County, reported slow fishing with
water temperatures right around 40 degrees. Boat anglers are seeking
musky and northern pike, but no fish were caught.
Grand Haven - Boat anglers trolling with spoons have caught
some salmon and steelhead just outside the piers. Perch fishing was fair
to good depending on the day. Try minnows in 50 to 70 feet of water.
Grand River at Grand Rapids - Is still producing good
steelhead and walleye fishing. Try fishing the deep holes behind the
Post Office with white jigs and wax worms or spawn bags. Lake trout have
been caught when rolling spinners on the bottom or when casting or
trolling spoons. Walleye have been caught off the Fulton Street Bridge.
Try bucktail jigs with minnows, Hot-n-Tots and crawler harnesses. The
crappies are hitting on minnows at Millennium Park and Riverside Park.
Reeds Lake - Crappie are still hitting on minnows near the
drop off on the north side of the lake. Boat anglers trolling for
northern pike are using rapalas and bodybaits.
Grand River at Lansing - Has few anglers, few reports and few
fish being caught. One angler did manage to catch a handful of bluegills
over at Moore's Park Dam. Still no word on steelhead this far up.
Muskegon - Whitefish have been caught when jigging spoons in
the channel by the Coast Guard Station. Pier anglers are still taking
some steelhead when floating spawn bags.
Muskegon Lake - Walleye have been caught when trolling Husky
Jerks after dark. The hot spot has been over the slab-wood piles near
Strawberry Island, which is located just west of Hartshorn Marina. Good
numbers of perch have been caught, however sorting will be necessary.
Muskegon River - Some steelhead have been caught along the
lower stretch of the river below Newaygo.
Northeast Lower Peninsula
Thunder Bay River - Whitefish along with an occasional
steelhead have been caught from the mouth up to the Ninth Street Dam.
Van Etten Lake - A good place to seek out perch in the fall is
near the YMCA Camp. Crappie were hitting on small minnows in 10 to 20
feet of water. Good smallmouth bass opportunities can be found around
Loud Island.
Oscoda - Pier anglers are catching whitefish off the North
Pier in the early morning.
Au Sable River - Steelhead, lake trout and whitefish have been
caught from the mouth up to the Foote Dam when drifting an egg, wax worm
or wiggler.
Tawas - Pier anglers continue to catch whitefish. Early
morning or late afternoon was the best times to fish with a teardrop and
wax worm fished just off the bottom.
Au Gres - Fishing for steelhead did slow, but should pick back
up with much colder weather in the forecast. Those fishing the East
Branch continue to catch steelhead near the Whitney Drain.
Higgins Lake - Boat anglers have caught brown trout and
rainbow trout when trolling near the drop off with planer boards and
rapalas. Those surfcasting around the entire lake have also caught
browns and rainbows.
Houghton Lake - Good numbers of northern pike have been caught
in the shallows during the day. Walleye are still hitting at night right
off shore. Live minnows, crankbaits and rapalas have worked best.
Northwest Lower Peninsula
Traverse City - Whitefish have been caught in the East Bay
near Elk Rapids. The fish have moved out to waters over 200 feet deep.
The West Bay reported slow action except for a few small perch.
Boardman River - Steelhead action has been fair to good.
Long Lake - In Grand Traverse County is producing good numbers
of walleye, but the fish are running on the small side so anglers will
need to do some sorting. Try using minnows and fish the flats right off
the shoreline.
Frankfort - Pier anglers are still catch whitefish, with the
better fishing in the early morning or late evening. Those casting
rapalas, stickbaits or spawn bags have caught some steelhead.
Betsie River - Anglers continue to catch steelhead even with
the warm temperatures. Look for fishing to improve when the onset of
colder weather by the weekend.
Manistee - Pier anglers continue to catch steelhead and
whitefish. The North Pier is still providing the better catch rates.
Big Manistee River - Steelhead can still be found in the
river. Try fishing the deeper holes. Those fishing up near Tippy Dam
have caught good numbers of brown trout, but the fish are running small.
Ludington - Boats trolling between the piers and the Big Sable
Point have managed to catch some steelhead. Pier and shore anglers have
caught steelhead and whitefish, with the better catches coming in the
early morning.
Upper Peninsula
Marquette - Pier anglers continue to fish for lake trout and
whitefish.
Green Bay - Brown trout and walleye have been caught off the
mouth of the Menominee River.
Little Bay De Noc - Some very nice walleyes have been caught
even though fishing has been slightly slower this year. Anglers are
trolling stickbaits on flats lines and planer boards in 10 to 25 feet of
water. Northern pike have been caught and those targeting perch have
also caught fish. |
