Parker Bend White River access gets new look
Eureka Springs – A floodwater release in 2004 heavily damaged the Parker Bend walk-in access on the White River. The popular trout access is utilized by both fly-fishermen and bank fishermen in northwest Arkansas. With the help of local anglers, a recently completed project to rebuild the area was officially dedicated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the site.

The project has a couple of unique features. Originally designed to be a concrete I-beam structure, it was revamped to feature two J-veins. The J-veins force the water away from the bank and changes the river's channel depth. The J-vein's are also designed to not only manipulate the river channel, but to change flow patterns around the structures that provides additional fish habitat.

The most important feature of the project is that it provides bank stabilization for that section of the White River. The veins also provide bank fishing access to the river for disabled anglers as well. Another feature of the project was the installation of a stocking tube that will help place trout into the area.

Several groups and individuals helped with the project. The Fayetteville chapter of Trout Unlimited donated $10,000 to assist in funding the project. Rock that was being removed from the construction of a Lowe's Home Improvement store being built in Bella Vista was used in the structures. The donation of the rock along was worth about $165,000. Without the donation of the rock, the cost of the project was almost $114,000.
