Spellman Lakes drawdown underway
Spellman Lakes drawdown underway
Staff from the Marshall DNR Wildlife Office have begun a drawdown of
Spellman Lakes in Yellow Medicine County in order to promote a winterkill of
undesirable fish such as carp, bullheads, and fathead minnows. Another
benefit of this drawdown will be the re-establishment of aquatic vegetation
that requires dry conditions for seed germination.
Ducks Unlimited, under a Heritage Enhancement grant from DNR, completed a
project last summer to replace the existing water control structure and
excavate a channel between North and South Spellman Lakes. DU also installed
a fish barrier at the outlet of North Spellman Lake to prevent the return of
undesirable fish once the drawdown is complete.
