Weekly Fishing Report
Kokanee salmon snagging season runs through Dec. 31 in the following waters: Abiquiu Lake, Chama River from El Vado Lake to west boundary of the Rio Chama Wildlife and Fishing Area, El Vado Lake, Navajo Lake, Eagle Nest Lake, Heron Lake, Willow Creek and the Pine River. Catches of the week
Cochiti Lake: Nov. 12, Jose Jurado of Albuquerque caught an 18-inch, 3-pound smallmouth bass. He was using a white spinner bait and fishing on the east side of the lake. Shuree Ponds: Nov. 12, Shawn Jones of Albuquerque caught a 20-inch rainbow trout. He was using a yellow San Juan worm.
NORTHEAST AREA
CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow as of Monday was .3cfs. This is typical for late fall through winter flows. Expect flows to increase and fishing to pick up in the spring. GRAVEL PIT LAKES: We had no reports from anglers this week. COCHITI LAKE: Fishing was fair for anglers using jigs tipped with minnows for white bass and an occasional smallmouth bass. A few smallmouth bass were also caught by anglers using tubes and spinner baits. We had no reports on other species. CONCHAS LAKE: Trolling crank baits at depths of 30-to-35 feet seemed to be the best method for catching walleye and white bass this past week. Anglers did well working the south side of the lake. A few walleye were also taken on jigs and spoons. Fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass was slow. A few smallmouth bass were taken by anglers using tubes and jigs worked in 15-to-25 feet of water. We had no reports on other species. EAGLE NEST LAKE: Kokanee snagging picked up a bit more this past week. Anglers did best in the Six Mile Creek area but a few were also taken around the boat ramp. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Trout fishing was good for anglers using roe sacs, power bait, salmon eggs and spinners. HONDO RIVER: We had no reports from anglers this week. LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing at both lakes was rated as fair-to-good this past week. Anglers at Lake Maloya did well using Super Dupers, home made dough baits and power bait. Anglers fishing at Lake Alice did best using salmon eggs. MONASTERY LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using salmon eggs and spinners. PECOS RIVER: As of Monday morning, water flow was 39cfs near the town of Pecos. Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using copper john barrs, egg patterns, salmon eggs, power bait, worms and spinners. Anglers fishing in the Villanueva area did well using salmon eggs and small spinners. RED RIVER: Water flow as of Monday near Questa was 18cfs and below the hatchery was 47cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using small parachute adams, egg patterns, small copper john barrs and salmon eggs. RIO GRANDE: As of Monday, water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge was 949cfs. Fishing was slow for all species. We did have a report from one angler who caught a few trout while fishing with salmon eggs. If you plan on fishing here in the high water conditions, use extra weight and larger lures and flies to attract the fish. RIO PUEBLO: We had no reports from anglers this week. SHUREE PONDS: Trout fishing was good for anglers using orange and yellow San Juan worms and 1/16 oz crappie jigs. Most of the fish caught ranged in size from 15-to-20 inches. STORRIE LAKE: Fishing pressure was very light this past week and fishing was reported as slow for all species. UTE LAKE: Fishing for white bass was fair for anglers using slab spoons and jigs tipped with minnows and a bit slower for anglers trolling deep running crank baits. Most of the fish caught were in 25-to-35 feet of water. Fishing was slow-to-fair using tubes, crank baits, jerk baits and minnows for smallmouth bass. Walleye fishing was fair for anglers using white, chrome and chartreuse slab spoons and working them in 30-to-45 feet of water. A short, slow jigging action worked best. We had no reports on other species.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light. ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS: Fishing on the Bernalillo and Belen Drains was slow-to-fair for anglers using worms, salmon eggs and salmon egg/corn combinations for trout. Fishing on the Corrales Drain was slow. A good portion of this drain was dredged over the past year and is now free of vegetation for holding fish. Look for areas that still have some vegetation and cover for fish. We had no reports from the other drains. ANIMAS RIVER: We had no reports from anglers this week. BLUEWATER LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. CHAMA RIVER: Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 215cfs and 212cfs below Abiquiu. Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using wooly buggers, streamers and spinners for brown trout. CONSERVANCY PARK LAKE: At the kids and middle ponds, fishing was fair for anglers using garlic cheese, salmon eggs, power bait and small spinners for trout. At the catch and release pond, fishing was fair using small copper john barrs, bunny leeches, dead chickens and small attractor dry flies for trout. EL VADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week. FENTON LAKE: Trout fishing was very slow this past week. Several anglers worked the lake from tubes and small boats and reported very murky conditions. There were a few fish caught by anglers fishing from the bank and using worms and power bait. The Lake Fork Day Use area is closed until further notice. HERON LAKE: The opening of the kokanee snagging started off a bit slow but picked up over the weekend. Several anglers reported taking limits of kokanee from areas near the La Laja boat ramp. Trout fishing in the snagging areas was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait and roe sacs. JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 29cfs. Fishing was fair-to-good this past week for anglers using egg patterns, small spinners, salmon eggs and worms for trout. Fishing on the East Fork was fair for anglers using small copper john barrs and salmon eggs. MANZANO LAKE: Trout fishing was good for anglers using small silver Panther Martins and power bait. NAVAJO LAKE: Kokanee snagging was good again this past week but should start slowing down as the fish are getting a little soft. Anglers did well snagging near the dam and near the Pine marina boat ramp. Trout fishing was very good in the vicinity of the snagging areas. Anglers did well using roe sacs and salmon eggs. Fishing for smallmouth bass was fair for anglers using deep running crank baits and tubes. The best reports we received came from anglers fishing in the Francis Canyon area. We had no reports on other species. RAMAH LAKE: The lake is open to fishing. However, it has not been restocked with trout and probably won't be until next spring. There are plenty of small bluegill and green sunfish available for some fun fishing. SAN GREGORIO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week. SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 489cfs. Trout fishing in the upper waters was fair for anglers using size 18-to-22 dead chickens, gray emergers, parachute adams, midge clusters and egg patterns. Fishing the lower waters was fair for anglers using jerk baits, power bait, salmon eggs, garlic cheese, wooly buggers and spinners.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON: We had no reports from anglers this week. BILL EVANS LAKE: Fishing was good using small spoons, power bait, salmon eggs and worms for trout. Fishing was fair using jerk baits and small swim baits for largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species. BURN LAKE: Fishing was fair using salmon eggs and power bait for trout. CABALLO LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light. This is one lake worth checking out and especially if you are a walleye angler. A recent survey showed the lake to be loaded with walleye. Give it a try and let us know how you do. ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing was generally slow for all species. The water color ranged from murky to muddy over most of the lake. Anglers reported visibility of 3 inches or less. GLENWOOD POND: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait. ESCONDIDA LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week. GILA RIVER: Water flow near Gila on Monday was 97cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. LAKE ROBERTS: Fishing was fair using salmon eggs, worms, spinners, Pistol Petes and power bait for trout. We had no reports on other species. PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow for all species. QUEMADO LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using spinners, power bait and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species. RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte was 0cfs as of Monday. Fishing was slow for all species.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE: Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout. We had no reports on other species. BONITO LAKE: Trout fishing was rated as good-to-excellent by anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, Pistol Petes and spinners. The lake closes to fishing for the season November 30. BOSQUE REDONDO: We had no reports from anglers this week. BOTTOMLESS LAKES: The lakes were recently stocked but we had no reports from anglers this week. BRANTLEY: Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers again this past week. CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week. GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: Fishing was good using spoons, salmon eggs, power bait, corn and spinners for trout. LAKE VAN: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait. PECOS: Below Sumner Lake, water flow on Monday was .67cfs. Fishing was slow for all species. PERCH LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using salmon eggs, small spoons, power bait and Pistol Petes. RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was 9.7cfs. Trout fishing was reported as fair for anglers using copper john barrs and small spinners. SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing for smallmouth bass was fair for anglers using crank baits, tubes, and senkos. We had no reports on other species. SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.
