Weekly Fishing Report

7 Springs kids

 Kokanee salmon snagging season opened Oct. 1 and runs through Dec. 31 in the following waters: Abiquiu Lake, Chama River from El Vado Lake to west boundary of the Rio Chama Wildlife and Fishing Area, El Vado Lake, Navajo Lake and Eagle Nest Lake. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

 

Catches of the week

 

Quemado Lake: Oct. 28, Jacob Garcia, 6, of Silver City, caught a 15.5-inch rainbow trout. He was trolling a gold Kastmaster.

Conchas Lake: Oct. 28, Dave Thielman of Albuquerque caught a 4-pound, 8-ounce largemouth bass. He was using a speed trap in 10 feet of water and fishing the north side of the lake.

 

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CHARETTE LAKES: Closed for the season. Will reopen March 1, 2007.

CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow below Eagle Nest as of Monday was 43cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using bead head hares ears, copper john barrs, flashback pheasant tail nymphs, worms and salmon eggs.

GRAVEL PIT LAKES: We had no reports from anglers this week.

CLAYTON LAKE: Closed for the season to boating and fishing. Will reopen March 1, 2007.

COCHITI LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

CONCHAS LAKE: The best reports we received this past week were from anglers fishing a walleye tournament. Most of the fish caught during the tournament were taken by anglers using slab spoons and blade baits at 30-to-35 feet. They were working the edge of the main channel on the north side of the lake. Fishing for bass was slow. There were a few black bass taken on crank baits and tubes and fished at depths of 8-to-25 feet. We had no reports on other species.

COYOTE CREEK: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using small wet flies, power bait and salmon eggs.

EAGLE NEST LAKE: Kokanee snagging continued to be very slow this past week. Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait and worms for trout. Fishing for perch was good for anglers using worms.

HONDO RIVER: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using copper john barrs and worms.

HOPEWELL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing at Lake Maloya was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, corn and salmon eggs. A few fish were also taken on spinners. We had no reports from Lake Alice.

MAXWELL LAKE 13: Closed for the season. Will reopen March 1, 2007.

MCALLISTER LAKE: Closed for the season. Will reopen March 1, 2007.

MONASTERY LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using corn, salmon eggs, power bait and spinners. A few trout were also taken by anglers using prop flies under a bubble.

MORPHY LAKE: Closed for the season. Will reopen April 1, 2007.

PECOS RIVER: As of Monday morning, water flow was 49cfs near the town of Pecos. Trout fishing was good for anglers using egg patterns, worms, night crawlers, salmon eggs, spinners, copper john barrs, parachute adams and wooly buggers. Most of the fish caught were in the 7-to-12 inch range.

RED RIVER: Water flow as of Monday near Questa was 21cfs and below the hatchery was 48cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using copper john barrs, worms, bunny leeches, salmon eggs and San Juan worms.

RIO GRANDE: As of Monday, water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge was 648cfs. Fishing was generally slow for all species but there were a few trout taken by anglers using spinners, wooly buggers and night crawlers.

RIO PUEBLO: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using copper john barrs, small bead head wooly buggers and worms.

SANTA CRUZ: Closed for the season. Will reopen April 1, 2007.

SHUREE PONDS: We had no reports from anglers this week.

SPRINGER LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

STORRIE LAKE: Trout fishing was slow this past week but should pick up as the lake was recently stocked.

UTE LAKE: Fishing was generally slow for all species although there were a few white bass and walleye caught. Anglers did best using jig and minnow combinations and slab spoons at depths of 30-to-40 feet. One good report came from anglers working spoons near Watson Island. Fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass was slow. There were a few taken on drop shot rigs and deep running crank baits. We had no reports on other species.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing was generally slow for all species. There were a few trout and catfish caught by anglers using worms and fishing from the bank. We had no reports on other species.

ANIMAS RIVER: We had no reports from anglers but the river was recently stocked and should provide some good fall trout fishing.

BLUEWATER LAKE: Fishing continued to be very slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

CHAMA RIVER: Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 227cfs and 170cfs below Abiquiu. Trout fishing above and below El Vado was slow-to-fair for anglers using wooly buggers, streamers and night crawlers. We had no reports from anglers below Abiquiu.

CONSERVANCY PARK LAKE: At the kids and middle ponds, fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, corn and worms for trout. At the catch and release pond, fishing was fair using small bunny leeches, Griffiths' gnats, small wooly buggers and bead head pheasant tails for trout.

EL VADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

FENTON LAKE: The campgrounds will be closed for a thinning project this week. However, the Lake Fork day use lower parking lot will be open for angler access from 7:30am to 4pm through Friday. For more information, contact the park office at 505-829-3630. The lake was recently stocked but we had no reports from anglers.

HERON LAKE: This lake along with Willow Creek and the Pine River are closed to salmon snagging at this time. You may still fish for trout at Heron but any kokanee caught between now and November 10th must be released. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait.

JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 36cfs. Fishing was fair-to-good this past week for anglers using egg patterns, copper john barrs, salmon eggs and small spinners for trout. Fishing on the Rio Las Vacas was fair for anglers using small copper john barrs and salmon eggs for trout.

LAGUNA DEL CAMPO: Closed for the season. Will reopen May 1, 2007.

MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

NAVAJO LAKE: Kokanee snagging was good for some but slow for other. The key was being in the right place at the right time. Several anglers reported snagging limits in a very short time during the early morning hours. They were working the areas near the south corner of the dam and off the parking lot at the Pine marina. Fishing was fair using roe sacs and liver in the snagging areas for rainbow trout and catfish. Fishing was slow for all other species. There were a few small smallmouth bass taken on drop shot rigs spinner baits worked deep off points.

RAMAH LAKE: The lake has been closed to all access due to a recent fish kill. The department will reopen the lake when conditions improve.

SAN GREGORIO LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair anglers using worms and salmon eggs.

SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday was 466cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using egg patterns, brown emergers, parachute adams, small wooly buggers, small copper john barrs, chamois leeches and bunny leeches. Downstream through the bait waters, trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, copper john barrs, wooly buggers, power bait, night crawlers, spinners and jerk baits. We had good reports from the Pump House Run area and from below Brown's Corner.

SEVEN SPRINGS BROOD POND: This water is for kids under age 12 only. It's a great place to take the little ones for some fun fishing.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, worms and spinners.

BILL EVANS LAKE: Fishing was fair using power bait, salmon eggs and spinners for 7-to-10 inch trout. Fishing was fair using crank baits and small worms for small largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

CABALLO LAKE: Fishing continued to be slow for all species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing was fair for anglers using chicken liver, and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using slab spoons, tail spinners and jig and minnow combinations for white bass. Most of the fish were taken at depths of 20-to-30 feet. Have a top water lure or shallow running lure handy as they will on occasion chase shad to the surface. Watch for active birds or for fish busting on the surface, then ease into the area and start fishing. Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was slow again this past week with just a few fish taken on crank baits and grubs. We had no reports on other species.

GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this week.

ESCONDIDA LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.

GILA RIVER: Water flow near Gila was not available on Monday due to an equipment malfunction. We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE ROBERTS: Fishing was fair-to-good using salmon eggs, worms and power bait for trout. A few were also taken on spinners. We had no reports on other species.

PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow for all species. A few walleye are being taken on white grubs.

QUEMADO LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using Kastmasters, power bait, worms, and prop flies. We had no reports on other species.

RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte was 0cfs as of Monday. Fishing was slow for all species.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE: Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, worm and spinners for trout. We had no reports on other species.

BONITO LAKE: Trout fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, Pistol Petes and spinners.

BOSQUE REDONDO: We had no reports from anglers this week.

BRANTLEY: Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers again this past week.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: Trout fishing was slow but the lake was recently stocked and fishing should pick up over the next week.

GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: Fishing was very good using Pistol Petes, salmon eggs, power bait, worms and spinners for trout.

PECOS: Below Sumner Lake, water flow on Monday was 95cfs. Fishing was slow for all species. There were a few small catfish caught by anglers using stink bait and liver.

RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was 25cfs. Trout fishing was reported as slow.

SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was fair this past week. Anglers did best using worms and crank baits. We had no reports on other species.

SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.
