Recreational Fishing Report

Great Lakes temperature map
Constant rains have made some of the rivers difficult to wade. Pier
fishing continues to be good for much of the state. This can be a great
time of year to fish the inland lakes for bluegill, crappie, bass,
walleye and pike.
Southeast Lower Peninsula
Lake Erie - Fishing has started to slow in the big lake as the
perch and walleye seem to be moving up into the southern end of the
Detroit River.
Huron River - Steelhead have been caught between the Flat Rock
Dam and Rockwood. The fishing is starting to get better as the number of
shad starts to decline. Fish have been caught on a variety of baits
including spawn, spoons, spinners and crankbaits. Some are floating a
wax worm under a bobber. A few crappie were also caught.
Detroit River - Walleye and yellow perch have been caught
between Metro Park and Celeron Island. Anglers are starting to catch
more walleye in the Trenton Channel. Try fishing the warm water
discharge near the Detroit Edison Plant. Perch can now be found in the
canals near Gibraltar and in the Metro Park Marina. Try perch rigs and
shiner minnows.
Lake St. Clair - When boats can get out, some nice yellow
perch have been caught off Nine Mile and Ten Miles Roads. Some are
fishing off Metro Beach and the 400 Club. Bass are hitting on tube
baits, spinner baits, crawlers or crayfish.
St. Clair River - Boat anglers are seeking walleye in the
North, Middle and South Channels. They are jigging, drifting or
hand-lining. Those fishing off the wall up near Port Huron are drifting
spawn for steelhead.
Saginaw Bay - When boats can get out, yellow perch can still
be found in 20 to 25 feet of water out near the Black Hole. Perch rigs
and shiner minnows were the ticket. A few perch have also been caught
near the mouth of the Saginaw River. The occasional walleye have been
caught in 10 to 15 feet of water.
Southwest Lower Peninsula
St. Joseph - The salmon run is done in the lake and around the
piers. Anglers are now catching steelhead and whitefish around the
piers, but the whitefish are running on the small side.
St. Joseph River - A few salmon are still being caught on
spawn, but the run is basically over. Steelhead fishing is picking up.
Fair to good numbers of fish have been taken with spawn working the
best. Boat anglers are catching more than shore anglers at this point.
Dowagiac River - The fishing continues to be good however
water conditions have slowed the catch rate. Continued rain, snow and
lots of leaves have made wading a challenge. Fly fisherman are doing
very well with egg patterns. Those casting are using spawn.
South Haven - The salmon run is pretty much done here as well.
Weather permitting; anglers have started to catch steelhead around the
piers.
Grand Haven - Steelhead have been caught on spawn off both the
North and South Piers. Those surfcasting have also taken steelhead on
spawn off the beach near the State Park. Whitefish and menomiee have
been caught off the South Pier.
Grand River at Grand Rapids - Anglers have caught a few fresh
salmon, but the majority of fish are now in pretty bad shape. Good
numbers of steelhead are in the river and some limit catches have been
reported. Those fishing along the Sixth Street Dam are using spawn,
flies or jigs tipped with wax worms. Below the Fulton Street Bridge,
anglers are using Hot-n-Tots or thundersticks. The better fishing was
during the first 4 to 5 hours of light. Those night fishing off the east
side wall have caught walleye using shiner minnows, bucktail jigs or
power grubs. Chartreuse and white have been good colors. Good crappie
fishing up near Riverside Park and below the Post Office.
Cranberry Lake - Reported good bluegill and crappie fishing.
Reeds Lake - Some nice crappie have been caught on minnows.
Fair to good northern pike fishing was also noted. Bluegills have been
caught in the shallows.
Grand River at Lansing - Salmon fishing is pretty much done.
With good numbers of steelhead reported at Grand Rapids, anglers are
hoping the fish make it up this far. Anglers are buying minnows for
crappie. Try fishing areas with deep holes and good cover, such as
downed trees. No reports on northern pike.
Muskegon - Steelhead have been caught off the South Pier.
Those surfcasting have also taken steelhead along the beach and near the
Water Treatment Facility. Spawn has been the bait of choice.
Muskegon River - Still has some salmon and the steelhead are
making their way into the river. Further inland, those fishing in
Missaukee County up near Houghton Lake reported catching some nice
northern pike on minnows when fishing above or below the Reedsburg Dam.
Whitehall - The salmon run has slowed to a trickle, but
steelhead are now being caught off the piers. Spawn bags have been the
favorite.
Northeast Lower Peninsula
Rockport - Make sure to bring your waders if you plan on
launching your boat, as the final dock was scheduled to be pulled on
Tuesday of this week. The restrooms will be closed as well. Boat anglers
trolling in the bay and between the shoreline and Middle Island are
going after walleye. Try fishing the Shelf or in shallow water near the
Humps. Pier anglers and those surfcasting are throwing a variety of
lures. Try casting south between the pier and the parking lot.
Alpena - The docks are still in for now but the fish cleaning
station has been boarded up and is closed until next season.
Thunder Bay River - Most of the fishing activity has been up
near the Ninth Street Dam where a limited number of salmon have been
caught. The salmon are deteriorating at this point, so few are active
enough to bite. Those fly fishing for steelhead are not having much
luck. Most are hooking into small salmon especially when drifting flies
in the rapids which are located between the bridge and the turbines.
Perch action has been slow.
Otsego Lake - Anglers are reporting nice catches of walleye.
Van Etten Lake - Is still producing some nice catches of
yellow perch. Try 10 to 20 feet of water just off from the YMCA Camp.
Oscoda - Night anglers fishing off the pier have caught a few
salmon, steelhead and walleye. A couple menominee were caught off the
North Pier. Some lake trout have also been caught and released as the
season is closed.
Au Sable River - Anglers are starting to catch an occasional
steelhead, as the fish have started to move into the river. Try floating
spawn or flies. Bass anglers have caught good numbers of fish in the
Foote Dam Pond and the Cooke Dam Pond. The fish are hitting on tube
baits, spinners or a piece of crawler.
Higgins Lake - Those fishing along the drop off caught a few
brown trout on rapalas or stickbaits. Some nice yellow perch have also
been taken on perch minnows.
Houghton Lake - Walleye have been caught after dark when
fishing around the shoreline. The trick is to look for minnows during
the day, then come back to that area after dark as the walleye will come
in to feed.
Northwest Lower Peninsula
Traverse City - Whitefish action on the East Bay was a bit
slow due to the weather. Some fish were caught by the Wall in 60 feet of
water on jigs or when still-fishing a single egg near the bottom. On the
West Bay, perch were caught on wigglers near the mouth of the Boardman
River and the Gravel Pit in 50 to 60 feet of water.
Elk River - The salmon action has slowed while the steelhead
bite is beginning to pick up. Most of the steelhead were caught when
drifting spawn bags along the bottom or still-fishing with spawn bags
off the dam.
Boardman River - A few salmon remain in the river but the
fishing action was slow. A few steelhead were caught near the mouth when
still-fishing with spawn on the bottom.
Crystal Lake - Perch anglers have taken some decent catches
when using minnows off Beulah or along the south shore.
Frankfort - Steelhead have been caught by both pier anglers
and those surfcasting with spawn. Depending on wind conditions, both the
Elberta side and the Frankfort side have been producing fish. Boat
anglers caught steelhead inside Betsie Bay.
Betsie River - Chinook in the river are pretty much done, but
a few are being caught on spawn or squid from the M-22 Bridge up to
Homestead Dam. Steelhead are starting to show up in the river.
Onekama - A few nice catches of chinook and coho have been
caught in 175 to 190 feet of water when boats can get out. Good colors
have been orange and green, and spoons seem to be working the best. The
piers and the beach have been slow, but a couple steelhead were caught
on spawn.
Portage Lake - A few perch are still being caught near the
channel. Northern pike and walleye were caught along the edge of the
weeds on the west end of the lake.
Lake Cadillac - A few limit catches of black crappie were
taken in 15 feet of water on the west side of the lake near the State
Park. Pike can be found in 8 to 10 feet of water along the weeds. Try
rapalas that look like minnows.
Manistee - Pier fishing and surfcasting have been very good in
the last week or so. Both piers are producing fish, but the North Pier
continues to produce more. More steelhead have started to show up around
the piers. Whitefish were caught on a single egg fished just off the
bottom.
Big Manistee River - Salmon fishing is pretty much done for
the most part. There might be a few around, but they're probably in
pretty bad shape by now. Steelhead fishing should only get better as
more fish move up into the river. Water levels are a bit high and may
hamper fishing efforts.
Ludington - Pier anglers continue to catch steelhead. Even
with all the rain and wind, those willing to stick it out have been
getting fish. Spawn off the piers and beach has worked best but a few
fish were also taken on orange spoons.
Pentwater - With the salmon run winding down, anglers are
starting to catch steelhead off the piers and when trolling the mouth of
the river. Spawn bags have worked the best.
Upper Peninsula
Keweenaw Bay - Coho have been caught on spawn bags and
crawlers when fishing off the rock dock at the L'Anse Marina. Angler
participation was down this past week, but fishing has been good in
Traverse Bay. Pier anglers have caught steelhead and lake trout when
casting Cleo's. Boat anglers trolling out from the Gay Stacks to an area
called the Buffalo Reef have caught some nice lake trout. A couple
steelhead were taken in 30 to 50 feet of water.
Falls River - Coho were caught when casting Mepps or Panther
Martin spinners.
Marquette - Only a small number of anglers have headed out on
the breakwall casting for lake trout with a couple fish landed. Some
have been trying for whitefish and menominee off the breakwall with
little success. A few boats trolling and casting near the Lower Harbor
breakwall have caught an occasional lake trout.
Dead River - The salmon run has slowed over the last week.
Green Bay - Near Menominee, fair walleye catches were reported
from the mouth of the river north to Henes Park. Just off the Cedar
River, walleye have been caught on planer boards with spoons in 20 to 30
feet of water from Wells State Park south to Hayward Bay. The blueberry
muffin has been hot. Remember to keep an eye out for the commercial
fishing nets.
Menominee River - Trout and salmon fishing slowed some over
the last week. Those drifting spawn between the Hattie Street Bridge and
the First Dam reported fair success. The good news is the walleye have
moved in! Some 16 to 22 inch fish have been caught from the landing at
the Hattie Street Bridge.
Little Bay De Noc - Walleye action was spotty. Those fishing
during the day can be found trolling crankbaits and crawlers in 19 to 35
feet of water around the Second and Third Reefs. Those fishing at night
reported a bit more success when trolling or drifting crawlers just
south of the Day's River in 11 to 25 feet of water. Some are trolling
crankbaits from the new piers out to the mouth. Fair perch fishing was
reported near Kipling when jigging minnows.
Big Bay De Noc - Very low angler activity reported over the
last week. Bass anglers have struggled. Most are working the break south
of the Garden Bluff using tubes and minnows in 15 to 40 feet of water.
No walleye reports.
Munising - Coho fishing ranges from slow to fair when casting
spoons or using spawn from shore. The best of the salmon run is now
done. A few splake were taken on spawn bags. Steelhead fishing has
picked up but was still slow overall.
St. Mary's River - The salmon run has slowed, however a few
silver chinook along with some atlantic salmon have been caught when
casting imitation minnow crankbaits near the Edison Power Plant.
Fire-tiger crankbaits seem to work best when casting from shore. Good
yellow perch fishing in 18 to 20 feet of water using minnows or worms in
Frenchman's Bay, which is on the Lake George side of the river. Walleye
anglers are having a hard time locating fish.
De Tour - A few anglers have been out targeting yellow perch.
The best places to try include Ashman Island, Grape Island and Yacht
Haven. Try minnows in shallow water.
Cedarville and Hessel - Catch rates slowed dramatically this
past week. Some are still targeting yellow perch with limited results.
If the weather improves, they should start biting again in Government
Bay and Musky Bay. Try 8 to 14 feet of water with minnows. A few salmon
are still present in the Hessel Marina. One angler targeting salmon was
surprised to land a splake instead.
Carp River - Anglers are catching a few salmon along with some
steelhead when fishing near the mouth.
St. Ignace - Anglers targeting salmon are fishing near Bois
Blanc Island and on the southwest side of Mackinaw Island. A lot of
effort is required for a limited catch. |
