Lake Columbia largemouth bass rules liberalized
 
MAGNOLIA – Restrictions on largemouth bass fishing on Lake Columbia, near Magnolia, will be eased beginning Jan. 1. The water-supply lake is one of several in Arkansas managed as trophy bass lakes.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission took the action at its October meeting in Little Rock after fisheries biologists reported the lake had an abundance of bass within the protected slot limit and that increased harvest was needed.

The new regulation changes the current 16 to 21-inch slot, four fish per day with only one fish over 21 inches to a 16 to 18-inch protected slot limit with an eight-fish daily creel limit, with only three of these over 18 inches.  The change is being made because fish were stacking up in the 16 to 21-inch slot and their growth was slowing. The harvest of some of these "slot fish" should improve the over-all growth rates, the biologists said
