Maumelle Nursery Pond will be released on Oct. 12
MAUMELLE – Lake Maumelle bass will soon be getting some much needed forage fish added to their diet. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's 50-acre Maumelle Nursery Pond will be released beginning Thursday, Oct. 12.

According to AGFC community fisheries biologist Clifton Jackson, the current crop of fish has been in production for about five months. "Over 10,000 pairs of pre-spawn adult threadfin shad were stocked into the pond earlier this year," Jackson said. "The shad have been allowed to reproduce and grow in predator-free environment and have increased substantially in number," he explained. "These fish will be a welcomed addition to the fish population in Lake Maumelle because there is currently too many bass in the 9 to 11 inch size classes," Jackson added.

The nursery pond will take about 30 to 48 hours to drain completely into Lake Maumelle. While the pond is being drained anglers will have an exciting opportunity as the water and forage flow rapidly into the lake creating a feeding frenzy, Jackson said. "A similar crop of forage has been proposed for the nursery pond next year as harvest objectives and supplemental stocking try to alleviate a bass population that has excessive numbers of small bass," he said.

An unsuccessful slot length restriction has reverted back to a statewide creel limit on bass at Lake Maumelle.  For more information about the Maumelle Nursery Pond or Lake Maumelle contact Jackson at (501) 978-7322.
