ASK THE GAME & FISH

Q."I heard I don’t have to use a shotgun to hunt grouse. Is that true?"

A. Yes and no. It all depends on the species of grouse. There are no weapons restrictions for hunting blue and ruffed grouse. Many deer and elk hunters carry .22 handguns as they frequently run into these mountain grouse species on their hunts. However the taking of other grouse and partridge and pheasant is restricted to shotguns or archery equipment.
