Visibility and Awareness Important for Hunting Season Safety

RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 9, 2006) – In some social circles it can be important to “see and be seen,” but when it comes to hunting season, to see and be seen is vital.

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission reminds everyone that a very important part of hunting safety is visibility and awareness in the field or forest.

In North Carolina, hunters are required to wear a cap or hat of blaze orange color (also known as hunter orange, fluorescent orange or 10-mile cloth) or an outer garment, like a vest, in blaze orange that is visible from all sides, when hunting bear, deer, wild boar, rabbit, squirrel, grouse, pheasant or quail with a firearm.

“It is the law in those situations,” said Capt. Chris Huebner, who coordinates hunter safety for the Commission. “Many non-hunting, outdoor enthusiasts will also wear blaze orange during hunting season, which is a very good idea.”

It is essential for a hunter to be absolutely certain of the intended target, knowing what is behind the target and its surroundings. Hunters should know where other members of their party are located at all times.

First-time hunting license buyers in North Carolina must complete a Hunter Education Course, offered free across the state by the Wildlife Resources Commission.

For more information on hunting safety, hunter education courses, and rules and regulations, including licenses requirements, visit ncwildlife.org or call (919) 707-0031.
