Wildlife Resources Commission Holds Special Hunt at Marine Base

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (Oct. 9, 2006) – The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission and the U.S. Marine Corps are extending an invitation to mobility-impaired sportsmen for a special hunting opportunity.

This historic Marine base in Onslow County will host the special hunting event on the evening of Nov. 14 and the morning of Nov. 15.

The event is part of an initiative by the Commission’s Disabled Sportsman Program, which works to provide outdoor recreational activities that accommodate handicapped participants.

“Participants should bring a companion to assist them with hunting, but an escort can be provided if needed,” Disabled Sportsman Program Chairman Susie Fish said. “The companion will be allowed to hunt adjacent to the participant.”

There will be 15 participants drawn at random from a pool of applicants. Fish listed the following guidelines:

bulletFor purposes of this event, “mobility-impaired” is defined as either confinement to a wheelchair, amputation of one or both legs or arms, or permanently requiring the use of mechanical ambulatory aids such as a walker or braces.
bulletParticipants must complete base registration, purchase a $5 permit and attend a safety course at noon, Nov. 14.
bulletOnly shotguns with slugs will be allowed.
bulletParticipants must wear both a blaze-orange cap and vest.

Applications are due by Oct. 30 and must be accompanied by proof of disability and a hunting license. For more information or to obtain an application, call Susie Fish at (919) 707-0059.
