2006 Pressey Silhouette Championships
Tom Keith

Broken Bow, Neb. – Eighty young Nebraska shooters participated in the 2006 Pressey High School Silhouette Championships held at the Pressey Wildlife Management Area south of Broken Bow on Sept. 30, according to Mike Streeter, hunter education coordinator for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Cole Bures of Odell is the 2006 State Champion with a score of 36 out of 40, and Micaela Jochum of Beatrice was high girl shooter score of 36 out of 40, making this the third consecutive year she has won that honor.

Silhouette .22-caliber rifle shooting is fired at small metal targets that fall when hit. During the match each competitor fires 40 shots, 10 shots each at 43, 66, 72 and 109 yards, shooting from a standing, or off-hand, shooting position.

“Shooting sports such as the Pressey silhouette championship in the fall and the Cornhusker Trap Shoot held each spring at Doniphan are lifetime sports that participants can enjoy for many years,” Streeter said. “Equipment requirements for the Pressey championship are very simple,” he added. “Any .22-caliber rifle, with or without a scope, and a box of .22- caliber ammunition is all that is required.”

The annual Pressey silhouette shoot is sponsored by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the Nebraska Shooting Sports Association, Hornady Manufacturing of Grand Island and the Pony Express Ramrodders Club of Gothenberg.

According to Streeter, the Pressey shoot is open to all Nebraska Hunter Education graduates who are 12 years of age and in grades 7 through 12. Shooters can compete as individuals and awards are also provided for high school, junior high school, open teams and 4-H teams of four shooters.
