2006 Maryland Natural Resource Photo Contest Winners Announced
Clarence Carvell of Fulton Takes Top Honors

ANNAPOLIS - The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced the winners of The Maryland Natural Resource 2006 Photo Contest, which was once again co-sponsored by DNR, Boater’s World Marine Centers and Ritz Camera Centers. Running from mid-April to September 8, this year’s contest netted more than 1,200 photographs submitted by nearly 300 photographers from every Maryland county.

This year’s grand prize winner is Clarence Carvell of Fulton, Maryland, for his entry “Running Fox,” a charming photo of a red fox racing across a winter landscape, snow falling lightly in the background. Second place went to Dianne Farley of La Plata for her endearing shot of a family of geese heading out on an early morning paddle entitled “Eight is Enough.” Third place was awarded to Edward Lowe of Colora for “Water Lily,” an element from a tranquil water garden setting. All three are first-time finalists.

“The Maryland Natural Resource Photo Contest is really gaining a name for itself among photographers,” said DNR Secretary Ron Franks. “Obviously, Marylanders take great pride in their natural environments and are excited to have a venue where they can showcase their favorite images. The talent these individuals possess is truly inspiring, and I am looking forward to presenting the winning entries on our website, in The Maryland Natural Resource magazine, and in our 2007 calendar.”

Ten other photographs submitted to this year’s contest were recognized as honorable mentions. Subject matter ranged from a shot of the log canoe “Magic” during a traditional mid-summer sail, Tolliver Falls in Western Maryland, an Eastern Shore marshland, a highly detailed image of an osprey in flight, and an eye-to-eye with a bullfrog. These photographs will be featured in the 2007 DNR Calendar.
