9/29/2006DEP Begins Fall Trout StockingFall stockings and sufficient flows mean a great autumn for trout anglers, Trout parks the place for family fishing adventure! FALL…when cool, crisp days, clear blue skies, bright white clouds, and vibrant foliage provide a spectacular backdrop for trout fishing. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced the beginning of autumn trout stocking. From now through late October, DEP expects to release nearly 44,000 trout into twenty-seven lakes and ponds, ten Trout Parks, and twenty-two rivers and streams. This fall, the DEP plans to stock twelve of the Trout Management Areas (TMA) and ten Trout Parks. Many of the trout Parks will be stocked twice. "Our designated Trout Parks have become quite popular with anglers," said DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy. "Trout Parks provide an excellent family destination and a great opportunity to reconnect with nature. I can’t think of a better way for a family to spend an afternoon during the height of the foliage season than picnicking and fishing in one of our scenic state parks." Conditions for both trout and trout anglers this fall should be much improved over last year when we had a relatively hot, dry summer, and very low stream flows, all followed by record precipitation in October. "Conditions in 2006 have been much better and many spring-stocked trout have survived and grown over the summer," noted Bill Hyatt, Director of DEP’s Inland Fisheries Division. "Barring any unforeseen storms, Connecticut anglers can look forward to excellent trout fishing throughout the fall." Most of the trout stocked this fall will be rainbow trout. However, over 1,300 large brown trout were stocked to begin the fall season. Earlier this month DEP released 700 Seeforellen-strain brown trout (all are 12-inch or larger fish) into the two TMA’s on the Housatonic River (500 fish into the Housatonic River TMA and 200 into the Bulls Bridge TMA). The Housatonic River stockings are intended to enhance the population of large "holdover" trout, which have not yet fully recovered from the extreme conditions experienced last year. The Naugatuck River TMA and the Pomperaug River Trophy Trout Area also each received 200 brown trout. Last week, 220 "Survivor" strain brown trout were stocked into the Farmington River TMA. These fish were all 12-15" trout, and are the offspring of fish captured from the Farmington River and spawned at a DEP fish hatchery. There are two first-time additions to the fall stocking schedule, Baummer’s Pond in Naugatuck and Day Pond in Colchester. Squantz Pond and the Farmill River have also been included in this fall’s schedule. Trout Parks have a two-fish per day creel limit. Fishing in all fifteen Trout Management Areas is catch-and-release only during the fall. Regulations vary on many of the other waters to be stocked this fall. The DEP advises anglers to check fishing regulations in their 2006 Connecticut Angler’s Guide. Guides are available from Town Clerks, many bait & tackle stores, or by contacting the DEP Inland Fisheries Division (860-424-FISH). The Angler’s Guide can also be accessed on the DEP web site at: http://www.dep.state.ct.us/burnatr/fishing/fishinfo/angler.htm Below are list of the Trout Parks, Trout Management areas, and other locations that are scheduled to be stocked this fall.
