Three DNR nature preserves to allow deer hunting

Conrad Savanna, Wabash Lowlands and Section Six Flatwoods to be open

Three nature preserves, Conrad Savannah (453 acres) in Newton County and Wabash Lowlands and Section Six Flatwoods (combined acreage of 674 acres) in Posey County will be open for hunting throughout the entire firearms and muzzleloader seasons.

The DNR will hold a drawing to limit the number of hunters each day for the first three days of firearms season. Twelve hunters will be drawn for each day for Conrad Savanna and a total of 10 hunters will be drawn for each day at the combined Wabash Lowlands and Section Six Flatwoods.

During the remainder of the firearms season and the entirety of the muzzleloader season, DNR will not limit the number of hunters.

Applications for the first three days of hunting during the firearms season at the preserves are available in hard copy at Willow Slough, LaSalle and Hovey Lake Fish and Wildlife Areas.

Email Lee Casebere at lcasebere@dnr.in.gov or visit http://dnr.in.gov/press/deer-app.pdf for an electronic copy of the application; forms must be submitted no later than Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. These special exceptions to nature preserve rules pertain only to Conrad Savanna, Wabash Lowlands and Section Six Flatwoods.

The purpose of the hunts is to reduce the size of the deer herds which have grown too large at the preserves as indicated by over-browsing and damage to vegetation. The goal of the deer reduction is to help restore and maintain the ecological balance.
