HONOLULU -- The Department of
Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will begin the second phase of
renovation work, including asbestos abatement, at Sand Island State
Recreation Area Comfort Station Nos. 5 and 6 starting Monday, September
25, 2006. The comfort stations are located at the ‘Ewa end of the park.
“Sand Island is one of the most popular state parks on O‘ahu,” said
Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. “These renovations are part of the
Lingle-Aiona Administration’s focus on improving park conditions to meet
accessibility standards, sewer improvements, and upgrade our
facilities.”
To ensure public health and safety, park users are advised to keep away
from designated project areas at these comfort stations during the
asbestos abatement activities on Monday. Renovation construction will
start thereafter. Portable toilets will be provided at these project
locations.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as we improve our park facilities
for residents to enjoy,” said Young. “We believe these changes will be
welcomed by the public. And we hope this will encourage park users to
help care for the facilities and leave them in good, clean condition for
other park users.”
Renovations activities include repairs to floor and wall tiles, repair
of toilet partitions and accessories, new paint, new roofing, and new
accessible elements, including showers.
