Crossbow Confusion on LBL

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky’s expanded crossbow season for 2006-07 is causing some confusion, as it does not apply to Land Between the Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area.

Crossbow opportunities have been increased significantly for the state’s 2006-07 deer and turkey hunting seasons. However, crossbows have not been and are still not permitted on the Kentucky portion of LBL (Trigg and Lyon counties).  On the Tennessee side, crossbows are now allowed during any archery season.

“We agreed to give Tennessee’s new crossbow regulations a try and we are monitoring the results,” said Steve Bloemer, LBL’s Supervisory Wildlife Biologist.  “We decided to leave our KY rule as is, for now.”

Under the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife’s statewide regulations, deer and turkey hunters may use crossbows from October 1-22 and from November 11 – December 31.  The Kentucky portion of LBL is an exception.

In years past, crossbow hunting in Kentucky had been limited to a 10-day block that fell between the close of the modern-gun deer season and the opening of the late muzzle-loading season.
