A Hunter Education class tailored to women is scheduled for Fish, Wildlife &
Parks’ Quonset classroom in Glasgow the week of October 2. The class will
cover basic hunter education details, but will include additional
information on handling a wide variety of firearms.
The class will be held from 5:30-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2 through Friday, Oct.
6. An optional field day and live-fire exercise will be available on
Saturday, Oct. 7 but, unlike traditional Hunter Ed classes, participants do
not have to attend the field day in order to be certified.
The class is limited to 15 students. While youth and adult men will be
considered for the class, priority will be given to women.
“We hear increasingly that mothers and wives who are exposed to firearms in
their households would like training on how to operate a gun, and to ensure
that it is unloaded and safe,” says Valley County Hunter Education
instructor Darlene Holt. “We will spend time each evening demonstrating how
various firearms operate and how to handle them appropriately.”
Just as in traditional Hunter Ed classes, this October session will also
include sections on wildlife conservation, personal responsibility, wildlife
identification, gun safety, big-game anatomy and shot selection, shooting
skills, field dressing, preparing for the hunt and outdoor survival.
Pre-registration for the course is required. Call FWP in Glasgow at 228-3700
or stop by the office on Highway 2 West from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to register
and pick up course materials.
