Record Yellow Bullhead Caught

PIERRE, S.D.—A Sioux Falls man reeled in a state record when he caught a 3-pound, 3-ounce yellow bullhead on Sept. 3.

Joseph M. Herrig was using a jig and nightcrawler while fishing at West 81 Lake about four miles south of Arlington when he caught the 16-inch fish.

The previous yellow bullhead record was a 2-pound, 12-ounce fish caught at East 81 Lake by Shawn S. Johnson.

In the event an angler catches a potential state record fish, these steps should be followed:

bulletKeep the fish cool, preferably on ice.
bulletWeigh the fish on a state-certified scale with a witness present. These scales are found at grocery stores, hardware stores and bait shops.
bulletKeep a copy of the scale weight slip or have the scale owner verify the weight.
bulletTake the fish to a Game, Fish and Parks Division of Wildlife office for positive identification and to fill out a state record fish form.
bulletFish weighed on a certified scale and identified by the GFP may be released.
